What is FCBD?
Free Comic Book Day is an annual event founded on the belief that for every person out there, there’s a comic book that they’ll love. Every first Saturday in May, the industry comes together to give away free comics and encourage fans, both old and new, to flock to the best place in the comic book community: local comic shops. These are the hubs of our community, where fans can come together and discover new comics, make lifelong friends, and find a sense of commonality.
Major publishers such as DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Dark Horse Comics, IDW Publishing, and Image Comics put out free comics for fans to enjoy at the more than 2,300 local comic shops participating in Free Comic Book Day. There’s truly a book for everyone: from superheroes, to popular film and television shows, to beloved video games, and all-ages stories. Popular series from past years have included Bob’s Burgers, Doctor Who, Assassin’s Creed, and SpongeBob.
New Releases:
Free Comic Book Day (FCBD)! Also known as Christmas for comic fans, DC Comics will take center stage on this beloved pop culture holiday with a pair of perfectly timed releases, including WONDER WOMAN FCBD SPECIAL EDITION #1 and DC SUPER HERO GIRLS FCBD SPECIAL EDITION #1.
Both books are great ways to get ready for the highly-anticipated Wonder Woman film. WONDER WOMAN FCBD SPECIAL EDITION #1 (written by New York Times Best Selling writer Greg Rucka and illustrated by Nicola Scott) tells the definitive and shocking tale of Diana’s first year as Earth’s protector. For younger comic bookfans, DC SUPER HERO GIRLS FCBD SPECIAL EDITION (written by Shea Fontana and illustrated by Yancey Labat) features an exciting story from the upcoming graphic novel DC SUPER HERO GIRLS: OLYMPUS that is coming out on June 27th.
Fans also love dressing up in costume for Free Comic Book Day, showing off their favorite series. Many stores throw their own events, bringing in cosplayers, local comic book creators, and partner with local businesses to make Free Comic Book Day one of the best family events throughout the year.
