5 Ways to Protect Childhood Eyesight

April 16, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Protecting your child’s eyes is an important part of maintaining their overall health and growth development.  Often times problems with your child’s eyes can go unnoticed as these problems may not be apparent unless your child tells you. To help protect your child’s eyes and prevent long-term problems try the five tips below.

Protect Childhood Eyesight

Limit Their Screen Time

With technology becoming a regular part of your child’s everyday life it is important to limit your child’s screen exposure to two hours a day or less.  Whether it is a computer, television, iPad, or smartphone, staring at a screen for too long throughout a day can lead to eye strain.

Have Their Eyes Regularly Checked

Having your child scheduled for regular eye exams is important not only for early diagnosis of eye disease but to make sure that they maintain good vision.  Some optometrists will even allow purchase of glasses online. Many young children will not communicate difficulties they may have with their vision.  Regular eye exams will let you know how well your child can see and if they are in need of corrective lenses.  Maintaining your child’s vision is important to help them be able to succeed at school, reduce strain on their eyes, and prevent vision-related issues such as headaches.

Protect Their Eyes When Outside

As a parent, you are probably quick to apply sunscreen every time your child is outside on a sunny day, but many parents fail to realize that UV rays can be extremely damaging to your eyes as well.  It is important to protect your child’s eyes on sunny days all year round as the sun rays can still be damaging in winter.  Make sure your stays in the shade, wears sunglasses or keeps a hat on to help prevent the sun’s rays from causing damage to their eyes. You can even get your favorite prescription set of women’s glasses tinted to add a layer of protection.

Make Sure There is Plenty of Light in Your Home

Whether your child is reading, doing homework, or watching television, having good light in the room is important to reducing eye strain and fatigue.  Ensure that areas in your home are well lit, either by overhead lighting or additional lamps.  If your child likes to read at night consider putting a reading lamp close to their bed.

Make Sure They Eat a Healthy Diet

Eat Healthy Meals to protect Children's Eyesight

Your child should be eating a balanced diet that provides them with essential vitamins and minerals necessary to maintaining eye health.  Children should maintain a diet that is rich in vitamin A, lutein, and omega-3 to support and maintain their developing eye health.

Try the five tips above to help protect your children’s eyes and promote healthy eye development.
