Home Preparation: 4 Ways To Prepare Your Home For Power And Water Outages

April 15, 2017 by Pam Maynard

It’s almost inevitable that there will be a power or water outage at the home at some point. Many outages occur during a natural disaster, such as a thunderstorm or an ice storm. These are the events that are a little easier to prepare for so that you have the supplies needed in the home. At times, there could be so many people using electricity at once that it malfunctions the power grid. These issues usually don’t take long to fix, but they are unexpected. If you’re prepared, then you can get through any outage with ease.

Batteries And Lights

Create a stockpile of batteries of all sizes and flashlights. You can also stock up on candles so that there is a variety of light available in the home in case something malfunctions with the flashlights that you have or the batteries. Keep a few items in each room of the home so that they can easily be accessed when the power goes out.

Checking The Fuses

Before a power outage hits, check the fuse box to see that all of them are in good condition. If there are any that are faulty or that looked burnt, then they need to be removed. A faulty fuse can go completely out when the power comes back on, or it could spark and trigger a fire that can quickly spread.

Securing Pipes

Check the pipes under the house and inside to see that there are no leaks. Companies like The Clean Plumbers can come to the home to look for leaks if you aren’t sure where the pipes are located or if you just can’t get to them on your own. Wrap the pipes in the winter so that they don’t freeze and bust. If there isn’t any water flowing through the pipes because of an outage, then it can cause them to freeze faster in the winter.

Storing Water Supplies

Keep containers of water in an area where they can be reached but out of the way until they are needed. An idea is to collect rain water in buckets or barrels so that you have water to flush the toilet during an outage. You want to keep at least three gallons of water for each day available to drink and wash with for each member of the home.

It’s best to prepare for an outage with the power and water and not need the supplies than not to prepare and be stuck without lighting or water when it’s needed. Create an emergency supply box with everything from water to food so that you have enough to last for a few days. Alert everyone in the home as to where flashlights and candles are located for when they are needed.
