5 Tips for Avoiding Spring Allergies

April 14, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Spring has arrived, bringing warm weather, flowers and pollen. Allergies are common this time of year, causing sneezing fits, itchy eyes and scratchy throats. Five tips to avoid spring allergies are outlined below.

Check the Pollen Count

Pollen is known as an invisible invader because it cannot be seen with the naked eye. Once it makes contact with the nose and throat, it can trigger an immediate reaction. Knowing the pollen count before going outside will help to plan the day and whether to take medication.

Stay Indoors

When the pollen count is high, it is best to stay inside. Keep windows and doors closed and use air conditioning. Pollen peaks in the early afternoon hours and is lowest in the morning and evening. Exercise and yard work should be postponed until those times.

Avoid Bees

Spring also means bees will be flying around to pollinate flowers and plants. While it is common knowledge that bees will sting, many do not realize those stings can cause a severe allergic reaction in some people. Symptoms of bee sting allergy include swelling around the sting site, hives, swelling of the tongue and throat and trouble breathing. A bee sting allergy requires immediate medical attention. Those who already have allergies are more susceptible to this sort of reaction and should avoid bees at all times.

Use Medication

An allergic reaction occurs when the body’s immune system treats pollen as an invader instead of a harmless substance. It releases histamine, which causes the itching, sneezing and watery eyes. Medications called antihistamines reduce or stop this reaction. Taking an antihistamine before going outside or in anticipation of a high pollen count will greatly reduce allergic symptoms.

Rinse Off

No one can completely avoid being outside in the spring. After running errands or working in the yard, take a shower and change clothes. When a shower is not available, washing the hands and face will remove pollen that is near the eyes, mouth and nose. If there are any pets in the household, wipe them down after a walk or outdoor play session.

While spring is a challenging time for allergies, it does not have to lead to misery. Following the tips above will reduce or eliminate allergy symptoms in most people. If you’re still having issues, a visit to an allergist business like Oak Brook Allergists may be in order. A little planning will go a long way toward a happy, healthy spring season.
