New Parents: 5 Tips for Taking Care of Your Sick Kids

April 8, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Your life is interrupted when your children fall ill. You may not know quite what to do and may be stressed over caring for and worrying about these precious little ones. Here are a few steps you can take to assist in getting them the best care and on their way to better health.

Ask the Experts

When your children are not feeling well, it is important to get medical advice. There may be a nurse hotline you can call if your youngsters are not ill enough to see a doctor. Give a detailed description of all symptoms; it is important not to leave anything out. Listen to this person’s advice and follow it to the letter. If the children appear to be extremely ill or you are unsure about the diagnosis, take them to their doctor or the emergency room at once. Clinics such as Premier Urgent Care Centers of California, Inc. are also a quick and easy method of expediting your children’s care. It is not worth taking risks with their health and it is best that they be seen by a physician immediately. It will give them immediate attention, and you will have great peace of mind.

Keep the Child Contained
It may be necessary to keep your sick children away from the rest of the family until it is determined whether or not they are contagious. Even if they are not, they still need to be kept quiet and still until they are feeling better. Make their rooms as comfortable as you can so they will remain in bed as long as possible. Treat them with breakfast and other meals in bed and tell them stories or play simple but quiet games with them.

Keep Him or Her Occupied
Find ways to keep their minds off of any fever or pain they may have. Play movies to keep their minds fixed on other matters. Make them feel special with extra attention and care. Check on them often and bring them healthy snacks and drinks if they have an appetite.

Hydration is Key
When children are ill, it is imperative that they drink plenty of fluids. Keep water, juices, and other beverages close at hand so they can drink plenty of their favorites. If they won’t drink anything, popsicles and ice chips are alternatives they might enjoy.

Caring for a sick youngster is no picnic. It can be a trying, frustrating, and sometimes very scary experience. Following the preceding tips will help you get through this calmly and efficiently. Before you know it, they will be begging to go outside and play or even asking to go back to school.
