Family Finances: How to Balance Your Kids’ Needs & Your Bills

April 6, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Your children are certainly the light of your life. You understandably want to do anything for them, but the reality of life is that we are often limited by our finances. There comes a time when every family needs to balance the needs and desires of their own children against the necessity of the household bills. Let us now examine four areas that this seems to impact the most.

Have Family Meetings

If you want to teach your children to learn to better prioritize their own needs in comparison with those of the family, have regular family meetings where you involve them in the decision making process. This will make them feel that you trust them, and it will also give them a chance to see how their actions impact the overall family finances.

Go for Family Memberships

Think of all of the things you could do as a family, yet you incur separate bills for at the current time. This can include gym memberships, golf clubs, library memberships, and more. Look around for deals in your local community as well. This is a great way to get your children what they need, while also looking after the bills that the family has. Any reductions that you can get will go a long way.

Don’t Forget the Insurance

As your children become drivers, you will need to remember insurance requirements in your state. Look for family discounts and be sure that your teen goes through a proper education and training course that qualifies for reduced insurance as a result. If you use an insurance firm, such as the Select Insurance Group, you’ll want to make sure that they’re added to your policy they start driving.

Have a Staycation

Bills come up monthly and there is little you can do about that. They must be paid, or some part of the family household will suffer. At the same time, you children have a need to go on vacation from time to time. Instead of incurring the expense of going out of town, consider a local resort that has all of the amenities and activities you normally do on a vacation. You may even want to consider a local campground as well. Whatever you can do far away can certainly be done in some way or form near you.

There are many ways to satisfy the every need of your child while still making sure that you are able to meet all of your monthly obligations. The key is proper planning and communication. These four tips will help you as you strive to balance the needs of your children with your need to pay the bills.
