Having kids makes you open your eyes to a whole new world. In Otis Grows by Katherine Hast, Otis is a small onion who looks at his parents, both different and then looks around. He discovers that just because his parents are this way and that way, Otis can still be his own person.
When I had my kids, I had to learn that they weren’t clones of me and my husband. I had to learn that they are their own person. It was difficult, but honestly, it makes me so happy to see their personalities develop.
In Otis Grows, Otis learns that his mom, (a chicken) and his dad, (a blue flower) can be who they are and he finds out that there is a huge big world out there with many different kinds of personalities. He could be whoever he wants to be.
As Otis grows up, the little onion discovers that there is a world beyond where he lives. His friend, Crystal, shows him other places and people. Otis will find his own way to live his life, as will everyone does.
Kathryn Hast is from Pennsylvania and currently, lives in North Carolina with her family. She has a master’s degree in writing and education. Her next book, Batty Betty will be released soon.
