House in Turmoil: What to Do After Your Home Suffers from a Natural Disaster

March 24, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Natural disasters are difficult to anticipate and can occur to different types of buildings. For those who suffer from a disaster in their residential home, the effects can be devastating. Although it can be difficult to know the right steps to take after your home suffers damage, there are a few important tips to follow.

Natural Disaster

Hire Professionals

Hire licensed restoration contractors to begin repairing your home to ensure that you only work with professionals that can stand behind the quality of their work. You’ll need to verify the track record of builders and roofers by calling former customers.

Ask the references if they were satisfied with the work that was performed and if the project was completed in the estimated timeframe. Get everything in writing and take your time before signing any contracts.

Also, if you are due compensation for any damages, take similar precautions and do your homework before contacting any hurricane attorneys.

Use a Public Claims Adjuster

One of the most common challenges that many people face after their home has suffered from a natural disaster is dealing with insurance. Hire a professional from an agency like Great Lakes Public Adjusting to receive money for the repairs and restoration work that is needed through your insurance company.

You can avoid the stress and headache of fighting with your insurance company or paying out of pocket to cover the cost of fully restoring your home.

Reduce Further Damage

If the home is safe to walk through, you can secure your home against further damage if possible. Recover salvageable items that you may find and remove them from the property. If your home has water damage, avoid entering the building for an extended period due to mold that may be present and can be harmful to your health.

Hire professionals to remove materials that have water damage and use dryers in each room to remove moisture that is present.

What to Do After Your Home Suffers from a Natural Disaster

Find Temporary Housing

Find temporary housing in the local area where you can live until your home is restored to its original condition. Keep all of your receipts for hotels or lodging, which may be reimbursed by your insurance company. You may need to find a place that welcomes pets if dogs or animals are in your care.

When your home has suffered a natural disaster, it’s important to practice safety when beginning the recovery process. By following the right tips, you can have peace of mind knowing that the destruction will be restored and you can eventually move on with your life.
