A few years ago our favorite cooking shows were teaching us new ways to look at cupcakes. My favorite was the one that made huge figures and elaborate displays for (and with) their cupcakes. It opened my eyes to all of the possibilities that the everyday cupcake could be; they had become like puzzle pieces that I could use in endless ways.
Much like this simple Easter Egg Pull Apart Cake!
Making this pull-apart cake was truly child’s play (and my kids LOVED it!). We prepared our favorite vanilla cupcakes and arranged them into an Easter Egg shape! I was able to do this by creating a row of three cupcakes at the bottom, two rows of four cupcakes in the middle, another row of three on top of that, and two more at the top of those. (See the picture below for the complete layout.)
After allowing the cupcakes to cool, I used a 1/4 cup ice cream scooper to drop frosting onto the top of each cupcake. After all of the cupcakes were topped with frosting, I smoothed it out with my frosting spreader/smoother as smooth as I could get it. Then I stuck the cake into the freezer for five minutes to allow frosting to set.
Using bright neon gel food coloring and cake decorating brushes, we decorated our Easter Egg Pull Apart Cake. If you notice, each line from our cake was made differently. Some rows were painted, others were swirled, and our favorites were when we used the brushes on their side to make small designs.
Tip: To make this cake more fun for your kids, my family suggests allowing each of your children to decorate one line of the cake using their own technique.
