Bird’s Nest Cupcakes Recipe and Tutorial

March 3, 2017 by Diane

Everyone loves fun cupcakes and these adorable Bird’s Nest Cupcakes are no exception! They are easy to make and will bring a smile to everyone! For the sake of making it super easy, I used a boxed cake mix and a tub of frosting, but you can easily make them from scratch if you would rather go that route. And, don’t let the long decorating instructions deter you! They really are simple, but I wanted to be very thorough for sake of explanation.

Bird's Nest Cupcakes

Bird’s Nest Cupcakes are timeless, as everyone loves them. However, they are especially pretty for an Easter or Spring celebration. Or, simple change the colors and wrappers for a pretty Autumn or Christmas themed party!

Bird’s Nest Cupcakes Recipe

Ingredients:

Bird's Nest Cupcakes ingredients

1 Boxed Cake Mix (plus ingredients called for)
Tub of Frosting
10 oz. Melting Chocolate
Green Food Coloring
Small Candy Bird Eggs

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees or directions on box.

Bird's Nest Cupcakes process

Mix the cake mix, following box instructions.

Place paper cupcake wrappers in muffin tins. Spoon in cake batter using an ice cream scoop or other utensil to measure evenly. Fill approximately half-way full or a little more.

Remove from oven and allow to cool completely on baking rack.

Spoon frosting into a large mixing bowl. Add a small amount of green food coloring and mix well with electric mixer or stand mixer. Add additional food coloring, to achieve the tint you want.

Using a closed star frosting tip and bag, pipe small stars to cover the cupcake top.

Working in small batches, use a small baggie to melt a handful of the melting chocolate. Push to one corner and snip the very tip off or use a toothpick to pierce a hole in the corner. Repeat melting as needed.

Building the nest:

The bird’s nest is made in layers. Begin by piping a circle in the center of the cupcake. Circle the cupcake a couple of times and move on to the next cupcake. Place on plate in freezer for a few minutes.

Remove and add another layer on the bird’s next. Repeat procedure until the nest have a little height.

Place 3 small candy eggs in center of bird’s nest, securing with a bit of the chocolate. Place in fridge for a few minutes.

Remove and pipe more chocolate around the eggs, building the nest up around them.

Enjoy!
