When winter is over and the temperature outside starts to warm up, it is the perfect time to open up your windows, air out your home, and glide your best steam cleaner over the floors. It is also a good time to do spring cleaning. There are many areas of the home that aren’t cleaned during your regular weekly cleaning that should get some attention during spring cleaning.
Windows and Treatments
Most people don’t have the time to wash their windows during each cleaning. Also, winter is not the best time to get on a ladder and clean the outside of the windows. You should go through each room of the home to clean the inside of the window with a glass cleaner. You should also pay special attention to the window frames and window sills. If you have newer windows that fold in, it makes cleaning the outside very easy, however, you would need to get on a ladder to clean the outside of the window frames. It is important to make sure that your ladder is sturdy before you climb up. If possible, have someone below who can hold the ladder.
Over time dust can build up on your drapes. You should take them down and wash them in hot water. If you have blinds or shades in the windows, you should wipe them down with soap and hot water. Consider visiting a store like Fischer Window and Door Store if you’d like to start the year off with brand new windows.
Cabinets and Closets
Spring cleaning is the best time to go through your cabinets and get rid of anything that you don’t need. You can also clean the inside of the cabinets and change the shelf liners. Spring cleaning is also a good time to clean out your closets. If you put your summer clothes away to make room for your winter clothes, you can switch them out. Also, you can see what you have and throw away or donate things that you no longer wear. If you have a closet for cleaning supplies, go through it making sure that you aren’t holding onto any empty containers or any products that you don’t need. Finally, if you use your closets for storage, see what you have and get rid of anything that you might not need. Cleaning the cabinets and the closets will keep you from accumulating things that you don’t need, freeing up space for the things that you do.
Carpets and Upholstery
The carpets in your home can take a real beating during the winter. People come into the home with muddy shoes or snow and salt on their shoes. Springtime is the best time to clean your carpets. You can either buy your own carpet cleaner, rent one from the store, or hire a company to come clean the carpets for you. If you are going to buy or rent a carpet cleaner, you should use the upholstery attachment to clean your couches and chairs. Not only will the furniture and the carpets look better, they will also smell better.
Appliances
You should give all of your appliances a good cleaning in the spring. You should go through your refrigerator and freezer and discard anything that has expired or that is freezer burned. With soap and hot water, you should clean the inside of the refrigerator. Next, pull the refrigerator away from the wall and vacuum the coils in the back. When too much dust builds up back there, it can make the refrigerator work harder than it needs to.
It is best to vacuum the coils twice a year. If your oven has a self-cleaning mode, you should run it. If not, buy a cleaner made specifically made for cleaning ovens. It is important to get all of the cooked on food off during spring cleaning. If you have a dishwasher, you should buy a detergent that is designed to clean the dishwasher itself. You would simply run it through a regular cycle without any dishes. You should also clean your washer and dryer. Cleaning your washer is simple. You would just run the washer through a cycle with detergent but without any clothes. To clean your dryer, use the skinny stick attachment on your vacuum cleaner to clean any lint that got passed the trap and is stuck around the edges. Most people don’t have the time or energy to clean their appliances during every cleaning, therefore, they should be cleaned during spring cleaning.
Baseboards
The baseboards in your home can collect a great deal of dust over time. If you are like most people, you don’t have the time to clean them during every regular cleaning. The baseboards aren’t too difficult to clean. To clean the top, you should wipe them down with hot soapy water. To clean underneath, you should use a vacuum cleaner to clean under the baseboards and inside. Once the top of the baseboards have dried, you should wipe them down with a fabric softener sheet. This will repel the dust, making it harder for it to build up on the baseboard. This will keep the baseboards cleaner, longer.
Spring cleaning is the best time to focus on areas of the home that you don’t clean during your regular weekly cleaning. It may be time-consuming, but it is important if you want your home looking its best.
