How to Help Your Teens Develop Their Musical Talents

February 22, 2017 by Pam Maynard

As a parent, you want to do everything that you can to help your children succeed. If your teen is an aspiring musician, there are many ways that you can help your son or daughter achieve his or her goals. What are some specific steps that can be taken to help a young singer improve his or her talent level?

It Starts With the Voice

Your child won’t be seen as a good musical talent if he or she doesn’t have any range. Therefore, it may make sense to invest in singing lessons with a professional voice coach. A good coach may be able to help your teen overcome any physical limitations that may be holding him or her back.

You Have to Market Yourself Properly

In addition to having a good voice, an artist must learn to call attention to his or her work. This means that you may want to teach your teen how to write an authentic artist bio and description that will tell a story and help to draw fans in. In addition, you may want to help your teen learn more about SEO and how that can help call attention to anything posted online.

Learn How to Act or Dance

There are many career doors to those who can dance or act in addition to sing. For instance, it may be possible to get a part in a show or movie by learning how to portray a character. Learning how to dance may help your young singer get a part on Broadway or some other production where he or she can get exposure.

Do You Need an Agent?

One of the unique aspects of being an artist is that you can create passive sources of income for yourself. As a parent, you may want to teach your children how song royalties work, especially when it comes to agencies like ASCAP or BMI, or other agencies. Learning these sort of things early can help in the long-term. If you don’t know enough about them to sound knowledgeable to your children, it may be a good idea to talk with an agent to learn more about them.

Your teenagers deserve every opportunity to showcase their skills and let their talents take them as far as they can go. However, it is important that you stress the importance of hard work, perseverance and versatility as ways to truly make it as an artist. It will also be helpful to teach them how to be smart with any money that they make from their craft.
