4 Great Ways to Prepare Homeschoolers for Picking a College Major

February 11, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Students who are homeschooled have many advantages, such as getting more individual attention and enjoying a more creative approach to education. At the same time, it can be challenging for kids who don’t take traditional classes to prepare for the future. For example, how do they choose a college major? Here are some tips for helping children who learn at home how to choose the best major.

It’s Not Necessary to Choose a Major Right Away

It’s not essential to choose a major your first year of college. Many college students, even those who weren’t homeschooled, begin their college careers with an undecided major. Nor do most students stick with the first major they choose. In fact, 70 percent of students change their major at some point. Considering such stats, there’s no reason for homeschoolers to feel pressure to decide right away.

Homeschoolers can use their general courses in college to help give them a taste of what particular degree programs will entail. This approach can save students time in the long run, as they will complete their general education first instead of starting specialized classes that will not contribute to a degree if they switch their major later. Even though it’s easy to feel pressured to plan out your educational future early, often this will backfire.

Remind Them That They Have Many Choices

While you can create a great future by majoring in business, English or computer science, there is a wide selection of majors from which to choose. It’s a good idea for homeschoolers to look into a wide range of possibilities. There are also many specialties within each field. If the student has a strong interest in a specialized area, you can search for a school that offers this major.

Consider Online Degrees

Homeschooled kids are accustomed to learning in a flexible, non-traditional manner. Online education is often a good match for this background. This choice also makes it easy to choose a major without worrying about the physical location of the school. Online programs are also worth considering for graduate work. For students interested in diplomacy and politics, for example, graduate programs in international relations are worth considering.

Collect Life Experiences

One way for homeschoolers to better prepare for college is to gain some life experiences beforehand. This includes taking an internship, traveling or volunteering. These type of activities help young people to identify some of their interests and strengths. Homeschooled kids have a more flexible schedule than other kids, making it easier for them to find the time to fit in experiences that help them identify what they want to do.

Choosing the right major can be challenging for anyone. However, it can be especially tough for homeschooled kids who grew up in a less structured environment. It’s important for these students to understand that they don’t have to make up their minds right away. They can take the time to identify the field that’s a good match for their interests and aptitudes.
