4 Reasons Why It’s Essential To Teach Kids About Oral Health At A Young Age

January 30, 2017 by Pam Maynard

The habits that you develop as a child are the same habits that you carry with you for the rest of your life. If you always brushes your teeth, flossed and used mouthwash several times a day, you probably still do those same things as an adult. Teaching your kids about oral health at a young age can instill in them those same habits, but those lessons are important for other reasons too.

4 Reasons Why It

Healthier Mouths Later

According to the Center for Pediatric Dentistry, early oral health lessons are important because those lessons can lead to healthier teeth, mouths and gums later. Teaching kids how to use toothpaste, ensuring that they use a paste and mouthwash with fluoride and showing them how to floss can prevent cavities and other dental problems.

Reduced Risk of Other Diseases

Oral health is important because it can lead to other diseases and medical complications. A simple toothache can cause pain in the head, shoulders and other parts of the body. If an infected tooth because abscessed, it can even lead to blood poisoning. Oral health habits taught to kids at a younger age teach them how to look for warning signs and when to visit a dentist like those at Williams Landing Dental Clinic. Regular appointments can reduce their risks of developing other conditions and diseases.

Improve Their Confidence

Dentists enjoy working with younger patients because they know that they can see their hand work pay off in the future. Kids who learn proper flossing and brushing habits have better confidence later. Colgate recommends that parents start working with their children as soon as those kids get their first tooth. Weaning your kids off bottles and pacifiers and instilling in them other good habits will help them grow up with strong and healthy teeth that will make them feel more confident.

Save Money in the Future

The most important reason to teach kids about oral health is because it helps you save money in the long run. Kids who do not take care of their teeth are more susceptible to cavities. Even a cavity in a baby or temporary tooth will need filling. As they continue carrying those bad habits with them, they may face problems like teeth that grow in crooked or adult/permanent teeth that need extracting. Those procedures can cost you quite a bit of money.

Parents of kids today must teach their kids about healthy oral habits and make regular appointments with a dentist. Doing so can increase their children’s confidence and reduce their dental costs later.
