5 Ways to Save Money on Your Utility Bills

January 26, 2017 by Pam Maynard

One of the most overlooked living costs is the cost of electricity and gas, which at times could be hundreds of dollars per month. While utility costs can be expensive, there are five ways that you can save money on your utility bills.

Buy Green Appliances and Fixtures
The first way that you could save money on utilities is by buying energy-efficient appliances. Energy efficient refrigerators, stoves, ovens, and windows are becoming more affordable and popular with consumers. The appliances and fixtures could reduce energy usage by over fifty percent and could also qualify you for various state and federal tax breaks.

Make Repairs
Another way to save money on your utilities is to make repairs to your electrical system. If you have an older electric system there is a good chance that it does not operate efficiently. If you have an older home it would be a good idea to hire a licensed electrician to see if your electric system is running efficiently. If it is not working properly, the licensed electrician will be able to make necessary repairs.

Compare Rates
Another way to save money on utility bills is to compare rates that are available. While most people believe that the utility companies have a monopoly in the marketplace, many cities across the country do have multiple providers. It would be worthwhile to get a quote from all providers as switching could save twenty percent or more.

Unplug Electronics
Unplugging unused appliances can also help to save on utilities. Even small appliances and electronics including microwaves, cable boxes, and phone charges use a little electricity when they are plugged in and not in use. By unplugging these items when not in use you will be able to save hundreds of dollars per year on utilities.

Smart Thermostat

One of the biggest ways that people waste electricity is by heating and cooling their home when they are away. By installing a smart thermostat you will be able to control the temperature of your home anywhere you are through the use of a mobile phone application. A smart thermostat will also learn your thermostat routines and can turn the furnace and air conditioning on and off depending on when you are typically at home.
In conclusion, utilities are an inevitable cost of living. While utility bills can be hundreds of dollars per month, there are five ways that you could save money on your costs.
