A Child’s Most Stressful Life Moments & How to Best Overcome Them

January 21, 2017 by Pam Maynard

When children are exposed to ongoing stress and have no way to deal with their emotions, it can have a major impact on their mental and physical health. Here are four common stressful situations that many children go through and what can be done to overcome them.

Death of a Loved One

Death often affects children much differently than adults. The most important thing that a parent can do is let their child feel and express all of the emotions that come along with the death of a loved one. From anger to denial, they must have the opportunity to go through the grieving process. Some children simply need to talk about the death and explain their feelings in order to overcome them.

Moving Away

Moving to a new home in a different state can be devastating for children. That is why you need to make the move itself as stress-free and relaxing as possible. Parents should consider hiring a professional moving company, such as Bekins Van Lines Inc, so that they can spend more time with their children. You might even be able to treat the move like a vacation by having some of their friends come along for the first few days. Whatever you can do to lessen the shock of moving will make the transition easier on your child.

Instability

Losing a loved one and having to move away are often really hard because those situations rock the stability of a child’s life. However, there are many other things that can do that as well, such as a parent losing a job, switching teachers at school, or someone not wanting to be their friend anymore. To a child, stability is crucial. Yet, it’s also important they learn to go with the flow and take what comes with ease. If anything is happening to your child that might be causing instability, start talking about it. Ask your child about what he or she will do to get through it and add suggestions as well. If your child is suddenly getting a new teacher at school, ask your child about how they will greet their new child. Maybe turn it into an exciting event by having your child draw a picture that they can look forward to giving the teacher. By helping your child think things through before or while they happen, he or she won’t be so stressed out. Instead, they’ll be more comfortable with what’s going on.

Bullying

Another situation that can add to the instability and insecurity that a child feels is bullying that might be happening to them at school or around your own neighborhood. It should never be taken lightly, and these stressful interactions could impact your child for the rest of their life. The child’s first response should be to walk away from the bully and tell an adult. You might also want to find activities that will boost your child’s ego and help them create their own identity. Whether it is a specific sport or a unique hobby, it is important that they develop a sense of self-worth.

Because children are so different, there is no single tool or tactic that will work for everyone. Instead, parents need to continue trying out new methods to help their children cope with their feelings so that they can handle stressful situations in the future.
