5 Ways to Make Your Winter Family Move Easier

January 18, 2017 by Pam Maynard

Moving is always a pretty stressful process. However, when you’re moving in the dead of winter, the process can often be even more hectic and stressful than usual. A winter move doesn’t have to be a recipe for disaster. Follow these tips to make your family’s winter move a little bit easier.

5 Ways to Make Your Winter Family Move Easier
1. Make the Weather Forecast Your Best Friend

When you’re moving in the winter, you should be checking the weather forecast regularly. Predictions about which days will be snowy and which days will be comparably mild will be invaluable when you’re deciding which days should be packing days and which days should be moving days.

2. Work With a Good Moving Company

Nothing makes a winter move more stressful than working with a subpar moving company that gives you a lot of grief. Thoroughly vet your movers and work with a company that has a good reputation and good recommendations, such as Midway Moving & Storage. Working with great movers can reduce a lot of the stress associated with moving during winter.

3. Be Careful When it Comes to Heating Costs

When you’re moving, you tend to have a lot of doors left wide open. Receiving a massive heating bill for your old residence is not a fun way to start your life in your new home. On moving days, turn the heat down considerably to avoid paying to heat the outside. Try to be diligent about keeping windows and doors closed when you aren’t actively moving items.

4. Create a Schedule and Stick to it

No matter what season you choose for your move, creating a schedule can take a lot of headaches out of the process. Create a six-week plan that factors in time for packing, landlord inspections and actually moving your belongings to your new home. When you plan ahead and stay organized, the process becomes a whole lot easier.

5. Practice Safety First

It’s understandable that you’re pressed for time during a move. However, if the weather has taken a turn for the worse despite a forecast saying that it would be mild, don’t risk injury or a car accident because of your moving schedule. It’s better to fall behind schedule than it is to put yourself at risk and your landlord will understand.

If you follow these tips, you can reduce the amount of stress and difficulty you experience during your family’s winter move.
