Winter is not without its downsides, but it can be a truly magical season if you know how to create the magic yourself. Winter creates the perfect opportunity for some awesome indoor and outdoor family fun. Here are six awesome family activities to try this winter.
Snow Building
No winter is complete until you’ve built at least one snowman. It’s a classic rite of childhood, and is one that can be really fun to do as a family. If anyone quotes Frozen’s Anna and asks that important question, the answer should always be yes. Build a snow-people version of your family for a special memory. You can also build snow forts or any kind of snow sculpture. Get crafty and have everyone build their favorite animal.
Sledding
This is another favorite childhood activity, but it’s fun for all ages. Find a good hill and spend an afternoon taking wild rides down. You’ll work up an appetite running up the hill so bring a thermos of hot chocolate to make the day even more special. Stay hydrated with some water as well.
Skiing or Snowboarding
If sledding is too tame for you, skiing is always a good choice for a winter family activity if your kids love adrenaline. If you don’t have your own skis, you can rent some from a ski rental center. Most centers like the Jackson Hole Ski Rental will even offer discounts for family or kid’s equipment at certain times of the year. If you’re new to skiing, take some lessons as a family first. At many slopes, children as young as two or three can learn how to ski. Find a favorite spot and make your skiing adventures an annual tradition your whole family will remember fondly all year.
Ice Skating
Gliding across the ice on skates can be a delightful way to spend a winter afternoon as a family. Outdoor rinks and lakes have a wonderful feeling of winter magic about them. Seeing other families have a blast while your own family is having a blast just heightens the experience. You can rent skates if you don’t own them.
Winter Bonfire
Most think of a bonfire as a summer activity, but in a winter setting, this activity can be really special. Something about the heat and beauty of the fire in the cold and snowy setting just feels right. Make sure you’re all bundled up and sit around the fire drinking hot chocolate or cider. Tell stories, play games, sing songs, or just watch the fire together.
Snuggle Up Inside
As fun as outdoor winter activities can be, sometimes a day snuggled up inside is the most fun of all. Snuggle up together on the couch with plenty of blankets and warm drinks. Watch a movie or watch the snow falling outside.
This winter don’t let your kid’s extra energy wear you down. Use it to your advantage and find some awesome winter activities to help burn calories and energy together.
