How Parents Everywhere Can Help Encourage Their Kids to Help the Environment

December 10, 2016 by Pam Maynard

As many people know, the environment is in desperate need of help. It has changed in ways that people have not seen before, and many adults are working to stop these changes from growing worse. However, adults cannot work alone in their missions; they have to educate the next generation by encouraging them to take practical steps to combat negative environmental change.

Turn off the Lights and Water
Your kids, even at a young age, can take measures to reduce the negative effects they have on the environment. Explain to them that they need to turn off the lights and water when not in use. You may want to develop a system of positive reinforcement to reward them when they remember to do so, especially if they are young. You may also want to revoke certain privileges if your children fail to do so.

Volunteer in the Community
Making changes around the house is important, but kids also need to see what is happening in their own neighborhoods. Perhaps a park has been destroyed by litter, or maybe the living creatures in a lake are suffering from pollution. Finding out about volunteer opportunities means that you and your kids can work together to make a change in the environment. Take before and after photos so that you can show your children how much they actually helped.

Discourage Excessive Car Usage
When your children begin to drive, they likely want to take the cars everywhere. Explain to them how cars are often negative for the environment; encourage them to walk or to take their bikes. You can also introduce them to online courses, online LLM degree programs, and online colleges and so forth as they begin to prepare for their future studies. Instead of taking the car to get to class every day, they can go on the internet.

Practice These Skills Yourself
Sometimes, parents want to encourage their children to be the people that they themselves never could be. No matter how far away you are from your own childhood, you can still work to make positive changes for the environment. If you want your kids to walk more, make sure that you aren’t taking the car just to go down the block to buy milk. If you want your kids to turn off the lights when they leave a room, make sure that you’re doing so as well.

Taking the time to talk to your kids about the environment is important, but it’s not enough. You also need to make actionable changes in your lives.
