When you have kids, getting them in, and out, of the car to see attractions can be a lot of work! This is why it is a great idea to incorporate small getaways that don’t require you to work so hard at enjoying them. Small getaways that, not only, can you drive to, but also stay in your car to enjoy! There are several trips and experiences your family can take that won’t even require you to get out of your car to take in. Over on the West coast there is a tradition that has been going on for generations: Driving your car through a tree! That’s right a living tree! There are three giant redwood trees in Northern California that you can drive through. I think this has to be one of the coolest things you can do in car! We all should do it! Can you imagine the look on your kids’ faces as they gaze up at the magnificent three-hundred (plus) foot tall trees?
But that’s not all you can do…
If you have ever dreamed of taking an African Safari and thought it was something you could only do in Africa? Wrong! Hop in your car and take a trip to one of the many drive-through safaris here in America. Some of these places have the same animals you would see on a true African Safari, like elephants, lions, zebra, and several others! Places in Florida or Wyoming/Montana offer drive-through safaris that include native animals that you may want to see but missed during your wild drive throughout the state.
Coastal driving! If you live near the coast chances are good that you have a leisure highway running along that shoreline. One of our favorite things to do is drive along the shore with our windows down. We watch the waves and try to spot sealife from the higher elevation. It’s our way of taking in the sea air without all the chaos of pulling out the beach gear!
Are you on a budget and not planning on venturing far from home anytime soon? That’s okay too! Don’t let a tight budget keep your wheels from turning! Look at the map and drive someplace nearby you haven’t been to before. Every state has something about its scenery that makes it special. Be it a varying landscape, scenic highway, or someplace unexplainable — go there!
