There are a number of concerns that plague the ageing, and the necessity of proper healthcare assistance and home care is what worries them the most. But at the same time, most of us aren’t really sure about the similarities and the differences of the same. Today, we will try to illustrate the biggest differences between the two services as per our experience in Connecticut.
What is the basic difference?
Older adults who need little or no assistance in their daily activities form an assisted living facility (ALF). Most of the individuals are allotted separate rooms, studio apartments or condos, and are encouraged to take part in daily activities. In case of home care, senior citizens receive assistance from specially trained individuals with their activities of daily life (ADL) right at home. This can be a 24/7 service or for a few hours per day.
There are three big factors that tell the two facilities apart:
- Cost: most people are really apprehensive about the cost of both assisted living and in-home care. It’s mostly because neither assisted living nor in-home care is covered in health schemes. There may be an odd private insurance company that will reimburse the family or the Veteran’s aid and assistance that helps with the cost. But most people who avail either of the services pay from their own pockets.
Average cost of assisted living: in CT, the average cost can be $4,950 per month (as of 2016). It may reach up to $10,800 in the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk area depending on the specific services required. Memory care is required for people with Alzheimer’s for an added $800-$1200 per month.
Average cost of in-home care: the hourly rate across the state is consistent at $20.The least expensive area is Norwich, where your personal assistant can charge you $18 per hour. For people, who love to stay at home and need minimal assistance, in-home care is a very economic and viable option.
- Servicesoffered: seniors who need little to no help with their daily tasks usually opt for ALFs. This is where residents receive pooled one-on-one care for about an hour per day. A member also pays for the food, boarding and interactive activities at the facility. ALFs are more like communities of like-minded people who live together under collective care. In case of private home care, seniors are eligible for one-on-one care. You can also pay for the number of hours you take the assistance. You can schedule your appointment for specific blocks of time beforehand and pay once your slot is over.
- Medicalcare: Residents do not receive any nursing care like diabetes injections, medication and eye drops. Personal attention and care is more limited for residents of ALFs since they are more self-dependent. Although most in-home care services do not provide medical services, you can hire medical professionals who specialize in home health care in CT for such services. You can select from a mélange of physicians, physician’s assistants, nurses and therapists from your area for medical services like the ones mentioned above.
Moving to a new facility for seniors or even appointing an aid for ADLs can be a tough decision for you and your family. Facing the concerns and getting to know your options in your locality is always the first step you can take towards a happier and healthier living.
