5 Must-Haves for Your Child’s Playroom

November 16, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Having a safe space just for your children to play in and where their messes can stay confined can be super helpful for any family home to have. If you’ve been thinking about dedicating a part of your house to this purpose, here are some great must-haves to make it cozy, comfortable and eye-appealing for all the little ones who use it.

An Effective Color Scheme

Selecting a color scheme can be difficult if you have more than one child and they are of different sexes. The girls might want bright pink and the boys might want blue. Although you could choose to split the room and have two different themes, it might be best to create a unisex theme with gender-neutral colors. To help you do that, pick out a painting or poster of a movie that all of your kids like. Then, choose the color scheme from that. Some movie themes that both your boys and girls might like are the Minions, The Incredibles, and the Jungle Book.

You can also get your inspiration from books, such as The Magic Tree House or Dr. Seuss. From such themes, you can get colors like red, green, brown and yellow–colors that do not scream “This is a girl-only play zone!” Of course, if you do have just boys or girls, then you don’t have to worry about that. It all just depends on what your children are into how well that fits into your family’s personality and the rest of your home decor.

An Age-Appropriate Theme

If movies and books aren’t the way that you want to go about choosing your theme, then you might want to focus on themes that foster creativity. Castle, zoo, treehouse and jungle themes are all great for children and can help them stay busy with hours of pretend play. If you have older children, you may want to choose your theme from their favorite video game or hobby. For example, if they are into skateboarding, you can decorate the walls with skating decks, posters of famous boarders and other such memorabilia. Just make sure to choose a theme that they won’t want to change for at least a few years.

Soft Carpet

Having carpet installed is very important, because it will add the warmth and comfort that the room needs. It will also help muffle the loud noises and shrill voices that might be coming from there. Not only that, but it will help keep children from slipping and help soften their falls if they tripped over a toy or something. Before you choose a carpet, though, make sure that you check the softness and see if it is comfortable. You can do that by going to a provider like Georgia Carpet Industries or whichever other place may be local to you and going through samples.

Storage Units and Shelves

An open shelving system can give you so many decorating and storage options. Books can be prominently displayed. Dolls and large toys can be set out at eye level and lower where children have easy access to them. Smaller pieces can be stored in plastic drawers or wicker baskets to keep the room always looking neat and organized. Just make sure that you use labels. If your children can’t read, then use pictures instead of words.

Child-Size Furniture

Make the room extra appealing with scaled-down sofas, chairs, and tables. It will make the children truly feel that the room is theirs. You may want to consider getting them a play kitchen, coloring table, and bean bag chairs. Giant stuffed animals that can double as napping beds might also make a great addition.

Decorating a playroom can be so much fun! It may even help you tune in to your inner child. Surrounding yourself with the above elements will give the room fun and flair that even the adults will enjoy when they join in at play time.
