Seasonal Storage: 5 Suggestions for Rotating Holiday Decorations

November 3, 2016 by Pam Maynard

The changing of seasons and each new holiday can be an exciting time for families. Children get excited about the traditions and activities that each holiday brings. Because many parents want to make every holiday a special one that kids can remember, they can easily become overwhelmed with the tasks involved to make that happen. One simple way to get everyone excited about the holidays and feel festive is to decorate your home. With a few tricks, rotating your holiday decor can become a breeze so you too can enjoy the season without the stress.

Organize and Label Everything

It’s important to stay organized and label everything when it comes to storing your holiday decorations. It can be tempting to spread out Christmas lights into different boxes or stuff too many items in one storage bin, but this will only cause you more stress when it comes time to decorate again a year later. Consider organizing by each room for separate holidays. For example, one box can be used for all your holiday decor in the living room, and another for the kitchen or porch. That way, if you only have time to decorate one area of your home, you can quickly find the items that belong in each area of the home. Use a variety of tape colors to label each box and lid. For example, boxes can be marked with blue tape for the kitchen decor items, green for outside and red for the living the room. By using colored tape, you can quickly glance at each box and know which one you need without having to read each label.

Storage Units

Over the years, you may accumulate more decor than you can store at home. With growing families, it can be hard to find a good place to store all your seasonal items. Using storage units to store your holiday decorations can free up space in your garage and keep your home free of clutter. Use boxes with different colored lids for each holiday so you can conveniently rotate through the boxes each time you’re ready to decorate again. Too often, special holiday pieces can get damaged when shuffled through the garage or home. Because many holiday items are fragile or sensitive to temperature, using a storage unit can help ensure that the items are stored properly when they aren’t being used. Protect Valuables

No matter where you store your holiday decorations, it can be easy to break valuable pieces. To protect your glass pieces or family heirloom decorations, be sure to use bubble wrap and paper. It’s also important that you don’t try to fit too many items in one box, as the added pressure can break even sturdy pieces. Make sure you cut bubble wrap and paper to the exact size needed for each piece. When you are using the decorations, keep the wrapping in the box it came out of so you don’t have to buy and cut new pieces each time. Use a small piece of tape and a pen to mark what each wrapping is used for so you can quickly store them correctly again when they are not in use.

Reuse Items

To make decorating easier, consider reusing some items throughout each season or holiday. For example, you can use a variety of fillers for glass vases that sit on your shelves or table. Mini foam pumpkins, fake fall leaves or candles and acorns can be used during the fall holidays. For Christmas, you can replace those items with ornaments or pine cones. You can also rotate through different photographs or paintings but keep the same frames on your wall. This makes it easy to change the look of your home with each holiday while keeping your regular decor items.

Get the Kids to Help

By getting everyone involved in your family, decorating for each holiday can become an opportunity to spend quality time with each other and build memories. Consider giving the kids their own special box for each holiday so they can get excited about decorating too. This can also keep little hands out of the valuable boxes so you don’t have to stress about breaking or losing items every time you bring out the new decorations. Depending on their age, you can involve your children with labeling, packing and decorating. The more helping hands, the less work you have to do when it comes to decorating your home for each holiday.

By using the above suggestions, keeping your home beautiful and updated throughout the seasons can be simple. Rotating holiday decorations can change from a dreaded, mundane task to an exciting time to spend with your family. With the right preparation, you can look forward to decorating your home and getting into the spirit of each holiday.
