Packing Away Your Life: 5 Steps of Getting Through the Emotions of Moving

October 26, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Moving to a different home isn’t just physically and financially stressful, it’s emotionally draining as well. Many people tend to feel overwhelmed or saddened at the major life change. Sometimes moving happens at very difficult junctures in life, such as divorce, death, or financial woes. Here are five ways of coping with the emotions that come with moving.

1. Plan Ahead.

Create a plan in order to stay organized during the moving process. Make a list of everything that needs to be done. During the move, stay on task and do not get distracted. Staying organized will help ensure that there isn’t as much stress during the move. The less overwhelmed you feel, the more you can focus on dealing with the emotions of moving.

2. Ask for Help.

For some people, it can be hard to ask for help. Some people prefer feeling like they aren’t reliant on others. The truth is, everyone needs help from time to time. It is especially important to have assistance from other people during your biggest times of need. Ask friends, neighbors or even professional movers to help move your belongings. Talk to your friends about the stress if you need an emotional release.

3. Be Careful with Your Belongings.

When it comes to cleaning out the clutter and junk, do not make any rash decisions. Go through all of your old things and carefully think about what to keep and what to discard. Exes tend to rashly throw out stuff that have sentimental value or may have a nice resale value. Take your time when sorting through your belongings and make sure everything is carefully selected. However, if you don’t think that you are ready to go through everything just yet, then enlist your friends to box your things up for you. There are many services out there, like Wheaton World Wide Moving, that can provide you with boxes to use. This could also make a nice last get together before you leave and can help create closure between you and your friends.

4. Stay Healthy.

It’s a good idea to eat well, get plenty of sleep and exercise during high stress life changes. If you feel too exhausted during the process of moving, then take a break. The healthier you feel, the more energy you will have when dealing with your own emotional well-being.

5. Take the Time to Say Goodbye.

Find a way to give yourself closure. If there are neighbors or friends that you won’t be as close to after the move, spend some time with them. You could probably even due this by hosting one last dinner at your place before you go. Another good idea for you to do before you depart would be to visit your favorite spots and reminisce over the good memories.

Anyone can feel uprooted in moving. One of the hardest parts of moving is saying goodbye to the old life and transitioning to the new life. The best thing you can do is prepare yourself beforehand.
