This weekend we finally had our first cold snap of the year and everyone is excited! With lows in the mid 50s and highs in the mid 70s we’re ready to do what Floridians do in the fall — go camping!
While our beaches are a great place to be to cool off in the summer, during the fall we look to the center of the state for all of our autumn recreation. Hook your boat to the truck and take off on a weekend camping adventure to the many lakes and rivers here in Florida. Some of our favorites include Lake Okeechobee down South, the St. Johns River in Palatka, the Ichetucknee River just North of Gainesville, and the Suwannee in White Springs. Each waterway has a different experience for you and an abundance of wildlife to observe.
Tips for Camping in Florida during the Fall
Camping in Florida is unpredictable anytime of the year. During a primitive camping trip in 2010 we had to retreat home because our nighttime temperatures were down in the thirties! Thirty-six degrees at night in Florida IS COLD! Check the weather forecast, make sure you are packing the proper clothing, and bringing any additional gear you may need in a cold snap.
Florida has bears AND they love your food! Please use proper food storage in the forest at all times. We usually leave all of our food in our vehicle whenever we’re not actually using it.
If you see any nocturnal animals during the day, stay away! Raccoons especially. We have had many reports of sick raccoons this year.
Bring bug spray for your body and your campsite! Spray the underside of your tent to prevent ants from sneaking in!
Always close your tent completely — just in case anything else wants to slip in when you’re not looking.
Check the fire threat level before starting any bonfires at your campsite.
