There are many people who long to create family traditions and have wonderful memories to look back on. For many, the missing link involves how to make it happen. With a little effort and the following four tips, you and your family can create a powerful bond through beautiful family traditions.
1. Agree on a Few Hobbies/Pastimes
Even though a family is created by people who share DNA and a bloodline, this doesn’t mean they share the same hobbies. In order for everyone to feel like they’re included in the family tradition, it’s a good idea to sit down and find out what a common pastime is. Pastimes can be anything from working on puzzles, making cookies or golfing. Choose a couple options and let everyone agree to try them out.
2. Set a Schedule
One of the biggest barriers to accomplishing any goal involves not having enough time. When people make time for what’s important to them, they’re able to experience success. Find out what’s a reasonable goal for the family. For some families, once a month is the best they can do. It also depends on what type of tradition it is. If it’s surrounding the holidays, it may only need to happen once. Many families love putting milk and cookies out for Santa with special dessert plates each year. Obviously, this is a tradition reserved for Christmas time.
3. Have an Adjusting Period
If your family chooses a tradition that happens on a consistent basis, make sure to have an adjustment period. Give everyone a chance to alter their schedules to reflect this new change. Consider sending a reminder out by phone when everyone is out at work to help them out. Family traditions require full participation and in a lot of cases, people just need time to get used to the new tradition before it becomes habitual.
4. Be Willing to be Flexible
It’s important to remember to go with the flow and be flexible in some cases. If the tradition involves late night television on the weekends, this may be out of the question when one of the children is studying for major tests. There are exceptions to every rule. If it’s possible, try to create an alternative option. If the alternative doesn’t work, don’t get discouraged. Just go with the flow and understand that everything will come together.
There are many people who don’t have close ties to family members. If you don’t, consider starting this tradition with close friends that are like family. The stronger the bond, the harder it is to break. Start these types of traditions within your family and watch the happy times increase.
