Planning the perfect party for your tween can be tricky. They have probably outgrown the childhood party themes, and want something more sophisticated. Once you and your tween agree on an appropriate idea, you can start planning the party. But how do you make sure it’s a day they enjoy and don’t cringe at later?
Make the Guest List
Start planning the guest list at least one month before the party. Start discussing themes, and ask your tween how many friends they want to invite to the party. If they want to invite the whole class, you might want to have the party at business meeting locations or a place like Noah’s Event Venues where you can fit everyone comfortably and won’t have to rearrange your home. This can also be perfect for tweens who are starting to get embarrassed about having their friends come over.
Choose the Theme
Your tween should choose a theme at three weeks before the party. No matter how many times they change their mind, you need to stick to the original theme. This way, you will know how much money you need to spend on the party, and can plan ahead as you get things ready. After choosing a theme, start designing your invitations. If they aren’t inviting everyone in the class, mail the invitations to the guests, or even just use text or IM to get ahold of everyone quickly. Make sure your tween is in charge of invitations and decides who to invite. This is a chance to make sure they include the friends they want and get the party they want.
Mail the Invitations
You should mail the invitations at least two weeks before the party. The invitations should have an RSVP date and contact information. Make sure to include an expected start and end time. You should also include other important information about the venue or activities planned. If your guests will need to bring anything to the party, it should be listed on the invitation.
Purchase Decorations
Purchase the decorations one week before the party. If you postpone your shopping, it could mean last-minute decorating. You should also start shopping for a cake or ingredients for their favorite treat. Your tween should have a hand in all these processes. Make sure they are excited about the décor picked out and that they are getting a dessert they enjoy. When they have a hand in the party, it makes it more special for them, and less of your own show.
The day of the event, decorate the venue together. Let your tween be in charge and have them direct you where they need help in the decorating process. Tweens are tricky and helping them, rather than doing all the planning yourself gives them more independence and lets them have the party they want.
