Back when my oldest three children were little I had this parenting thing all figured out. We had schedules and a bedtime routine that required all of the little people in the house be asleep by 9 p.m. After they were asleep I would begin cleaning and doing all of my housework for the day. Looking back now that sounds like a dream, but it was reality for us for a few short years.
Then we decided to have another child (and another, and another, and another, and … yes, I’m pregnant now.) And now nothing about my home is organized, scheduled, or done by midnight. Blissful chaos has erupted and instead of yearning for those organized years, I’ve adapted and changed.
One of the main things that has changed is that cleaning is done, when it can get done. Sometimes that means I’m cleaning first-thing in the morning, other times I’m cleaning during the afternoon madness, and on the days when I’m really lucky, I might get to clean a bathroom at midnight. I had to learn to change when I clean and the way I clean, so I can work with my kids — instead of kicking them out of the room!
