4 Reasons Why Home Maintenance Should Be More Of A Priority

October 7, 2016 by Pam Maynard

The phrase, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” has never been truer than when it’s applied to home maintenance. While many homeowners may view it as expensive or time-consuming, nothing is as expensive or time-consuming as trying to remediate a poorly kept home. If that isn’t convincing enough, there are four key reasons why more homeowners should invest in home maintenance.

4-reasons-why-home-maintenance-should

It’s Greener

While it’s better to replace an energy-inefficient system with a greener one, nothing is as green as the home or appliance that’s already built. Proper maintenance of a home’s roof, exterior, plumbing, and HVAC system can help avoid needing wasteful replacements. Not only will maintenance save money, it helps keep home systems working well and out of landfills.

It’s Safer

Home maintenance isn’t just necessary to avoid repairs, the alternative can actually be dangerous. Undetected basement leaks can lead to dangerous black mold growth. Malfunctioning HVAC systems can be potentially deadly in extreme weather conditions. Leaky roofs can lead to structural damage, or even collapse. Keep an eye on foundations, don’t ignore roof leaks, and have your air conditioning system repaired by professionals such as those at Pacific Aire, Inc., when necessary.

It Preserves Property Value

Having to repair or replace something within a home isn’t the only way that maintenance can save money. Homes that are poorly maintained have less value when compared to their neighbors– few potential buyers are willing to pay full price on something that’s been turned into a “fixer upper” through negligence. Keeping a home well-maintained is critical to keeping its value high.

It’s Important For Homeowner’s Insurance

Homeowners insurance can protect against loss in a lot of situations, but problems arising from poor maintenance aren’t among them. Pest infestations, leaks, structural damage, and other issues that could have been prevented by regular maintenance aren’t only not covered, they may make a property uninsurable. Something like lingering water damage from a burst pipe or dripping HVAC system may be a red alert to insurance companies that a home is an unacceptable risk.

Maintaining a home costs money, which is why it’s every bit as important to budget for as a mortgage or electric bill. Without it, the consequences can be loss of even more money, an uninsurable property, harm to the environment, or even illness or injuries. Don’t risk it– stay on top of home maintenance projects.
