How to Troubleshoot Your Problematic Pool

September 24, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Swimming pools are fun and offer some health benefits not only for swimmers but also for anyone who needs exercise to improve heart rate without putting so much pressure on joints. However, they also bring illnesses if they are not properly maintained. A Problematic pool needs troubleshooting in order to avoid recreational water illnesses or RWI.

how-to-troubleshoot

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the most common RWI people may get from problematic swimming pools is diarrhea. For this reason, swimming pool owners and operators should immediately troubleshoot problems in their pool before anyone may become a victim of RWI. There are ways to troubleshoot your swimming pools according to problems and symptoms. Here they are:

Cloudy and Dirty Water

According to the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group, cloudy and dirty water is caused by ineffective filters and disinfection failure. Nevertheless, here is how to troubleshoot it:

  • Reduce bather loading
  • Backwash thoroughly and maintain bed
  • Control the hardness of calcium
  • Check filters and released trapped air
  • Check the disinfection dosage and adjust it
  • Green Cloudy Water

Pool water should be blue and sparkling. But when it is green and cloudy, the water has algae. Algae is converts sunlight into waste that becomes the feeding ground of bacteria. Here is how to fix it:

  • Treat the pool with 10ppm-free chlorine which 10 times the recommended minimum level
  • Circulate the water
  • Brush the pool and vacuum
  • Clean or backwash your filter
  • Burning Eyes and Throat

If your eyes seem to get hurt after a prolonged stay in the pool, the most probable cause is low alkalinity and high pH level. The solution is to reduce the dosage of acid and increase the alkaline level. Take note that pH prevents bacteria. It is best to adjust the dosage from time to time.

Pool Equipment Factors

A proactive approach to pool maintenance, including the purchasing your pool equipment correctly, as it plays a vital role in creating a safe and enjoyable swimming environment. With the proper equipment and regular consultation with pool maintenance experts, you can ensure that your pool remains a healthy and delightful place for swimming, free from common issues like eye irritation, stains, and bacterial growth.

Stains on Walls and Floors

Stains on walls and floors are caused by the presence of metals such as manganese, copper, or iron. To remove these metals, oxidize the metal and vacuum up the rust. Add a chelating agent to put metals in an inactive complex. It is recommended to conduct water testing regularly to determine which metals are present in the pool.

Conclusion

It is normal for swimming pools to have problems. This is why they need consistent maintenance and troubleshooting when problems arise. Nonetheless, you don’t have to do it all. You can hire a service provider such as Slater H & Son Pty Ltd to do fix your swimming pool problems or maintain them. By getting professional help when it comes to things like this you can make sure that you pool is always as clean and healthy as possible. Now, that is something that is well worth the investment.
