How to Manage Your Family Finances Effectively and Efficiently

September 10, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Managing your finances effectively makes it easier to manage your household effectively. For instance, it can be hard to take care of your kids if there isn’t any money for school clothes or a trip to the dentist. The same is true if you forget to save money for the rent or to pay the light bill. What are some ways to manage your finances in an effective and efficient manner?

Create a Budget

You can’t manage your finances unless you know how much money you make and how much you spend each month. While your budget should be flexible, it should also be as realistic as possible. Ideally, you will pay your bills first, save second and pay for discretionary items last.

Make Use of Benefits Available to You

If you are a disabled veteran, you may receive benefits that can help you pay bills or otherwise stay ahead financially. Professionals, like a veteran’s disability lawyer, knows that the amount of your disabled veteran benefit is determined by the severity of the disability and the number of dependents you may have. Those with a disability rating of 30 or higher may be entitled to compensation to help care for a spouse, a child or children over 18 who are attending school.

Money Monitoring Tools

Your credit card company may have tools that allow you to track your spending, check your FICO score and develop a plan to pay down your debt. Smartphone apps may show you how compounding interest can turn just a few dollars saved today into thousands of dollars a few years down the line. This can give you the motivation that you need to save, pay down debt or otherwise keep track of your finances during your busy days.

Don’t Be Afraid to Say No

Your kids may whine and gripe about not being able to buy a toy or go out for dinner. However, they don’t understand that the money needed to buy that toy takes away from having enough money to live in a decent home or have access to reliable transportation. Therefore, you have to be able to say no and stand firm if you want to keep your finances in order.

Managing your finances can be complicated whether you are on salary or work a varied schedule. However, creating a budget and tracking your spending can make it easier to pay your bills and make sure that you don’t overdraw your accounts.
