Family Finance: How to Handle Being out of Work on Disability

August 20, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Being out of work on disability can make it seem like your new full-time job is worrying about how to make ends meet. When you are on disability, you have to plan ahead in order to stretch your budget as far as possible. You have to make hard choices about what is really important. However, you can do things to make handling your finances while on disability easier. Here is a look smart tips you can follow to manage your finances if you are on disability.

Make a Budget

The first thing you need to do to manage your finances is to make a monthly budget. You have to sit down with a calculator and determine which things you can afford with your disability payments. This is often a sobering process, but it is absolutely crucial if you want to keep your finances in order.

Shop Around

One of the very best things you can do when you are on a fixed income is to become the ultimate shopping guru. There are loads of great deals out there for those who are prepared to look for them. Try to wait to buy all non-essential items until you can get them at a discount.

Get an Attorney

The amount of disability that people are awarded is not always fair. Sometimes people even get denied disability payments when they clearly deserve them. According to Chewning Legal, a group of Milwaukee disability lawyers, if you think that you are not being treated fairly by the Social Security Administration, then you should consider talking with an attorney. Attorneys specializing in disability cases know how to best work through the red tape to yield positive results.

Save Money

If you are receiving disability payments, then you are not allowed to accrue more than $2,000 of assets without risking your benefits. However, there are many excluded assets. You can open a plan for achieving self-support (PASS) savings account that allows you to save more than $2,000. It is a great idea to save money when you can in case you someday need to make a large purchase that your benefits won’t cover.

It is tricky to manage your finances when you are on disability, but it is possible if you take the time to do proper planning. The key is to be honest with yourself about what you really need and what you can really afford. When you are careful with your finances, you can live comfortably on monthly disability payments without stressing yourself.
