5 Things to Include in Your Car’s First-Aid Kit

August 3, 2016 by Pam Maynard

There might be a time when you are in an emergency while in the car. It could be a child who gets a finger slammed in a door or someone who is carsick. You can create a simple first-aid kit that can be kept in the trunk of the car, under a seat, or in the glove compartment until it’s needed. All of the items that are included can be placed in a small plastic box that you can get at a dollar store.

5 Things to Include in Your Car's First-Aid Kit

Adhesives

It’s best to include rolls of gauze as well as packs that have gauze squares in them in your first-aid kit. You can also include Band-Aids in your kit. These items are necessary for cuts, scrapes and other issues where blood is involved. Include safety pins so that you have a way to keep the adhesives in one place. Tape is also an option when it comes to a way to secure a bandage. You can often prevent a cut from getting larger by placing a piece of gauze over it until you can get it stitched.

Liquids

There are a few liquids that you want to include in your kit. Make sure you have an antiseptic spray. It’s something you will need for any kind of cut so that the area stays clean. Hydrocortisone creams are also something to have on hand to help soothe rashes. At times, there might be people in the car who are allergic to insects or a food that is consumed in the vehicle. You should have medications that can treat the symptoms of these conditions until you can get to a doctor. A pain reliever is also something to keep in your kit. A liquid form is often best for children as they might not be able to swallow a pill.

Items for Injuries

While you’re on the road, you never know if there will be a time when you come upon the scene of an accident or if you have to deal with a severe injury involving a family member in the car. Include hot and cold packs for headaches and other aches that someone might experience. Gloves should also be in the kit in case you have to touch bodily fluids. Other items that you might want to include for dealing with injuries are masks and plastic bags. A mask can be worn for protection against viruses that might cause an illness in the vehicle.

How-to-use-an-EpiPen

Epi-Pen

This is an important item to have in the first-aid kit. Someone could be allergic to something that is eaten or a type of plant that is touched while walking outside of the car. The pen often has enough medication for a few doses in the event of an allergic reaction. It’s important to administer the medication as soon as possible before going to a doctor to be examined.

Blankets

In cold weather, it can be dangerous in the event of a breakdown or flat tire to rely on the car’s heater to stay warm, so having a blanket in the car is always a good idea. You can use the blanket to keep yourself warm or to wrap around each other until help arrives. It’s also useful to have if there has been an accident on the road and traffic isn’t moving for some time.

You will find that nothing is certain when you’re traveling. There is no guarantee that there won’t be some kind of accident that takes place in the vehicle. If you find yourself in a serious accident, look for injury accident help in Boise, Idaho; however, a first-aid kit that has been properly made with all of the basic essentials will be a benefit at any time of the day or night in the event of a lighter emergency.
