4 Steps to Take after an Incident on the Road

July 9, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Getting into a car accident can be a very traumatic experience even if you aren’t injured. But it can wind up being an even worse experience if you don’t handle the situation properly. Here are four steps you should take after you have an incident on the road.

4 Steps to Take after an Incident on the Road

Make Sure Everyone is Safe

The first thing you should do in any car accident is to make sure anyone in your vehicle and the other vehicle or vehicles is OK. If anyone seems to be hurt, even a little, you should call 911 to get an ambulance sent. Even if no one is injured, it’s also a good idea to call the police if there is significant damage to one or more of the vehicles or if there is damage to other property.

Exchange Information

You and the other driver and drivers involved should exchange information, including your names and phone numbers as well as insurance information. Rather than writing everything down, ask to take pictures of drivers licenses and insurance cards and let the other driver do the same. For instance, a Boise car wreck lawyer knows how important it is to exchange information after an accident has occurred. You also should take pictures of the damage to your car and the damage to any other cars or property. Having all of this information, especially solid evidence of damages incurred, can be very helpful if you later need to get legal help to deal with the accident.

Talk to Witnesses

If there were people who stopped to help or if you see people standing around who you believe saw what happened, talk to them and get their names and numbers if possible. You also should give their information to the police if they don’t stick around long enough. Witnesses can be valuable if you wind up in court over the accident.

Call the Insurance Company

No matter how minor an accident is, you always should call your insurance company, especially if another driver or someone else’s property is involved. Not only will you get a claim started right away to ensure your car gets repaired, but you also will alert your insurer so it knows it may be hearing from other insurance companies. You should let your insurer know if you or anyone else was cited in the accident and if anyone was injured.

Car accidents are common, so it’s likely you will experience one at some point in your life. Following these steps will help ensure that your bad experience on the road isn’t made worse.
