Counseling Children – Discussing Education at the Right Time

June 29, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Every child can learn. However, not all children learn in the same way or at the same rate. A lot of external factors can affect a child’s ability to excel in school.

Counseling Children

External Factors That Affect a Child’s Ability to Learn

Children who live in a troubled environment that includes substance abuse, poverty, or violence may find paying attention to school subjects to be a challenge. Children who are experiencing changes in their family structure, such as divorce or the loss of a parent, may also find it difficult to learn. Social stresses and interactions with other students may put a child at risk of educational failure. For this reason, school counselors must be alert to the needs of their students and have the discernment to know when to speak with a child or their parents about their education.

The Changing Role of School Counselors

Parents may be surprised to learn that the interaction between children and school counselors is drastically different than what it was a few decades ago. Counselors who work in schools today are trained mental health professionals. They are focused on maintaining the emotional and mental well-being of all of their students. Counselors focus on providing academic, social, and career guidance to the students and their school. Their goal is to help their students along with their parents be successful in life, especially in the academic world. Modern counselors help children understand themselves.

Counselors Make a Difference

Counselors work with students to help them pursue personal growth and educational development. They will direct students, especially those reaching graduation age, to services and programs that can facilitate their getting a college education. Since counselors work with some of the same children for many years, they are aware of the gifts and skills that these children possess. This allows them to direct the students down an educational path that is best for them. For example, if they see that a student is a caregiver and has the patience to work with senior citizens, they may direct them to an online college course to get a gerontology degree online. After suggesting a course of study, counselors will coordinate school and work initiatives to help their students achieve their goals.

A Parent’s Role in a Child’s Education

Studies have made it very clear that children do better academically when their parents are involved. Parents can work closely with counselors to encourage their children to have the motivation and the positive attitude necessary to excel at learning.

Every child can learn. They may need to overcome some obstacles as they go through the learning process. However, with the help of their parents and a qualified counselor, all children can have a bright educational future.
