How to Protect your Children from Pesky Invaders

June 13, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Pests in the home are more than a simple nuisance. Insects like roaches can carry disease, and carpenter ants can literally destroy the structure of your dwelling. Your family is at risk from bites, illness, and the general headaches that come from sharing your living space with the little invaders. The good news is that there are a few things you can do to keep the home and family safe.

Home Invasion How to Protect your Children from Household Hazards (1)

Start Outside
Great protection actually starts outside the home. Take a careful look at the dirt around your foundation. When the soil around your walls touches wood, it creates an easy entry point for termites and other intruders. The soil should be well below your wood sill plate and any siding, and it should slope away from the home for proper drainage.

Next, check your home exterior for gaps and cracks that provide crawling insects with fast access. Not only will you keep most of the bugs out, but you’ll also make the home more energy efficient. While you’re inspecting the structure, make sure that all screens are intact and fit snugly within their frames.

Clean Inside
Bugs and rodents love clutter because it provides them with handy nesting places. While clean homes can also fall prey to infestations, they will be much easier to treat if the homes are reasonably clean. In addition to eliminating the extra clutter, you can also take steps to ensure that there are no piles of leftover food in the sink, sitting in your kids’ room, or in other random areas throughout the home. Empty wastebaskets promptly, and check the areas around them for stray garbage.

Turn to the Professionals
The longer an infestation goes, the more damage you’ll have to deal with. You should call in the professionals from a company like Midwest Pest Control, a pest control service in Owasso at the first sign of problems. In fact, one treatment may be enough to address a recent problem, but a long-term issue can require multiple visits and will most likely carry a higher cost.

Protection for the Kids During Outbreaks
If you’re already dealing with an infestation, then you’ll want to give your children a little added protection. If possible, dress the little ones in long pants and shirts to keep the bugs off their skin. Start the cleaning efforts with their rooms so that they can have a safe haven.

You don’t have to share your dinner, home or life with unwanted pests. Take care of the basic maintenance outside and inside your property to make it a less attractive target. Rather than waiting to treat an issue, ask for assistance at the first sign of problems. With the right steps, you can keep your children safe from the tiniest of intruders.
