Growing Family? What to Look For in a New Home

May 18, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Though most people simply buy a bigger house as their family grows, there are some people who would prefer to stay in the same house. And even if you do plan to move at some point, you don’t want to outgrow your home too quickly. That’s why if you have a growing family there are some certain thing you should pay attention to when you are looking for a new home.

Growing Family

Number of Bedrooms

For many people, one of the top concerns when buying a home is the amount of square footage. But for those with a growing family, a bigger consideration should be the number of bedrooms. Though young kids, even those of opposite sexes, can share a bedroom for a while, it’s going to become a problem as they get older, so you should focus more on bedroom numbers than square footage. If you have one child and another on the way, you shouldn’t settle for anything less than a three-bedroom home, and if you are planning on having another child, go for four or more if you can afford it.

Schools in the Area

If you have children or you are thinking of having children, a major thing to look for in a new home is the schools in the area. You not only want to consider the quality of the school district as well as the quality of the specific school in your neighborhood, but also how far away the schools are. While elementary schools will be your primary concern, you also want to think about the secondary schools on the chance that you may stay in the house for a long time. If you have a certain school or school district in mind, ask a realtor for Gloria Nilson’s list of homes for sale in that area or use a screen on local real estate websites to find a list of the homes you are looking for.  Having a list on-hand can help make the search for a home much easier.

Potential for Expansion

You never know for sure how big your family is going to grow, so when you are looking for a house for a potential growing family, you should evaluate its prospects for future expansion. For example, does it have basement or attic space that could be remodeled into additional bedrooms and/or bathrooms? Is the lot large enough that you could physically expand the home’s footprint.

When you have a growing family, you always have to be looking toward the future, and that includes considerations about the home you buy.
