DIY Star Wars BB8 Shelf Decoration #craft

May 18, 2016 by Misty Stephens

I love Star Wars, and I am very happy they have started a new trilogy, so it is fresh and new for my children.  It is fun to watch them choose their favorite characters, and get excited over all the Star Wars products everywhere.  From toy light sabers to clothes, jewelry to wall decor, there is plenty of Star Wars to satisfy all the fans out there.

I redid the children’s bathroom in Star Wars. Now there is a Star Wars shower curtain, and an R2D2 soap dispenser, an R2D2 shower head, and a storm trooper toothbrush holder in there.  It looked good, but it needed a little something.  I decided to create a BB8 to finish off the decor.

Supplies you need:

  • 1 -4 inch styrofoam ball
  • 1-2 inch styrofoam ball
  • 1 skewer stick
  • 1 small terra cotta pot
  • 3 toothpicks
  • white, black, gray, and orange paint
  • paint brushes
  • knife
  • pebbles or rocks

First I painted the styrofoam balls white.  After letting them dry and applying several coats, I used a knife to cute the smaller ball.  Not in the middle, but just so it has a flat bottom.  Then I placed it onto the larger ball with a toothpick to make sure it sat right.  I had to shave some more off, and then it was good.  I painted the exposed bottom of the small ball gray.  I also painted the skewer white and pushed it into the larger styrofoam ball.  Here you can see the basic arrangement.

While the smaller styrofoam ball’s gray bottom was drying, I worked on the large ball.  Holding it from the skewer I hand painted orange circles on the ball.  I used some images of BB8 to get them right.  Then I added the lines on the circles in orange.  Next using a gray I added details in the center of the circles, plus the connections between the circles.  I set the stick in a vase to allow my paint to dry.

When the body was dry, I put back on the smaller ball for the head.  I stuck two toothpicks into the top as the antennas that BB8 has.  I painted one white, and one was gray with black at the top and bottom.  Next I painted on the gray stripes on his head, and the two black circles.  There is also some orange details around his head.  I hand painted these details on.

I also painted the pot black.  I thought it would go well in the space bathroom being black. I decided last minute to paint stars and stuff on it, so now it looks like space itself.

I then put the skewer into the hole in the bottom of the pot, and surrounded it with rocks to keep it standing upright.

There you have it.  BB8 on a stick, lol!  Now he is sitting on the bathroom shelf looking so darn cute.  My BB8 would also make a fantastic center piece at a Star Wars birthday party.  My son loves it and wants to make one for his room too.  He is a big BB8 fan.  I think I still like the dark side myself, but hey it takes all kinds!
