Summer Camp Crunch: Packing Tips to Get Your Kids out the Door Faster

April 29, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Finding the perfect summer camp for your kids was just the beginning. Now you have only a few weeks left to get your kids packed and ready for their time away from home. While packing for camp will take a little work, it will be well worth the effort when you can relax, knowing your kids are on the adventure of a lifetime. Whether your kids will be gone for a week or a month, these tips will streamline your packing so you can get them and all their gear out the door faster and with less drama.

Check the Supply List
Most camps provide a list of suggested items to bring along with any things that may be prohibited. Knowing what is necessary can help you eliminate extra bulk in their bags, while making sure you do not forget an essential item such as sunscreen. Use these suggestions along with your child’s requests to compile a master checklist that will give you peace of mind when the final bag is zipped.

Roll Clothing Before Packing
Rolling up t-shirts and shorts will save space in your kid’s bags, while keeping everything wrinkle-free. As you roll, sort into piles of similar articles of clothing. Then, place each set into a gallon size plastic bag that can be labeled with what it contains. This will not only make it easy for your kids to find what to wear, but it will also make sure everything makes it back home.

Pack Portable Toiletries
At summer camp, kids tend to count their daily swim as a bath, so it’s not absolutely necessary to pack full-size products. Still, your kids will need to clean up at some point, so send travel-sized shampoo and soap along with their toothbrush and toothpaste. Once you’ve gathered your kid’s personal hygiene products, place them in a plastic container that can easily be carried from their bunk to the shower.

Store Hair Ties on a Carabiner
At camp, long hair has to be contained or else your kid will wind up with a head full of tangles. Keep hair ties from getting lost by adding the loops to a colorful carabiner. This way, your kid will have everything they need to try out the awesome braids and girls hairstyles they saw on cutegirlhairstyles.com. Better yet, check out this mom fashion blog and other websites and help your daughter practice a few types of braids before she leaves so she returns with some fun hairstyles and memories instead of a tangled mess.

Include a Few Comfort Items
As much as they will be having fun, almost every kid experiences a little homesickness. In your rush, don’t forget to pack a few surprises to get them through those days. Flashlights are always helpful for easing any fear of the dark on the way to the campfire. A family photo, silly note, or a favorite blanket tucked in their bag is also great for lifting your camper’s spirits.

Going to camp is a great way for your kid to gain some independence, but you can bet on them needing help packing. By creating a checklist and using a few organizers, you can give your kid a sendoff that includes everything they need to enjoy their summer vacation.
