What to Look for and Avoid in a Sunscreen if You Have Sensitive Skin #BlueLizard #MDRAdventures

April 25, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Disclosure.New.3

It is that time of the year again when we all enjoy being outdoors in the beautiful sunshine. If you are going to be out in the sun for any length of time, you’ll want to use sunscreen to help protect your skin from harmful UV rays. If you have sensitive skin, selecting the best sunscreen can be difficult because some ingredients can be too strong or harsh.

Sensitive skin can be challenging to deal with. According to Doctor Jessica Wu, a professor of dermatology at the University of Southern California Medical School, “Sensitive skin is characterized by redness, itching, stinging, swelling and flaking. Skin cells usually act as a barrier- holding water in and blocking irritants from entering the body- when that function is compromised, sensitivity results.”

It is because of this, you need to take extra precautions when it comes to sunscreen. When choosing a sunscreen, there are some ingredients you’ll want to look for and some ingredients you will want to avoid.

With sensitive skin, there are basically four sunscreen ingredients that you want to avoid: Retinyl Palmitate, Oxybenzone, Benzophenone-3 and Amino Benzoic Acid. While it is true that Retinyl Palmitate is a derivative of Vitamin A, you may think that it is good for you. However, when this ingredient is put into sunscreen, then exposed to the sun rays, the ingredients can actually raise your risk of getting skin cancer. The ingredient Oxybenzone may disrupt your endocrine system, Benzophenone-3 has the ability to trigger DNA damage and Amino Benzoic Acid may actually amplify cell damage.

The best ingredients you want to look for in a sunscreen are Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide. Zinc Oxide is a natural broad spectrum physical sunscreen, acting as a reflector of not only UVA rays but UVB rays as well.

One suggested sunscreen product for those with sensitive skin is Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen Sensitive formula. You are probably wondering what makes Blue Lizard stand out from other sunscreens right? Well, the first thing is that the Environmental Working Group considers Blue Lizard to be one of the leading sunscreens. Second, Blue Lizard is most recommended by dermatologists as well as pediatricians.

The two main active ingredients in Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen Sensitive are Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide. Also, the sensitive skin formula is chemical-free, fragrance-free and paraben-free. This full spectrum sunscreen features an SPF of 30+ with a minimum of 6% Zinc Oxide providing a broad UV coverage.

In addition to the sensitive skin formula, Blue Lizard features formulas for all of your family members including Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen Baby, Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen Face, Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen Sport and Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen Regular.
