Termites and other pests are very unwelcome guests in any home! After all we never want to share our food or our home with these disgusting creatures. I’m sure you would hate to see mice scurrying around the house, or roaches sharing a well-cooked meal with you.
You can search online for termite control services to help you protect your home, but there are also some simple steps you can take to keep termites and other pests at bay:
- Total cleanliness! Be extra clean, especially in the kitchen. Food particles left all over the kitchen counter and the floor tend to attract roaches and rodents. Clean your floor daily and wash dishes regularly. Never leave dirty dishes in the sink for a long period of time; even if you have soaked them, they will still attract pests. Keep the dustbin area clean and well covered, always pick up and clean particles that fall around the dustbin. Never leave the trash in your home uncollected over a long period of time; this is a perfect breeding ground for all types of pests.
- Maintain a dry home. Pests like termites thrive in dampness. Therefore make sure you fix any leaks in your house and clean out any wet or dirty gutters out-doors. Remove any piece of furniture that is already rotting because the dampness is a perfect environment for termites.
- Keep your food well sealed. Always keep food properly sealed in storage. Especially left overs, always keep them well-covered, otherwise the roaches will enjoy sharing your tasty meals with you. Dry and uncooked food should also be well sealed, for example sugar that is constantly kept in the open is likely to attract ants.
- You can use pest repellent. When painting or renovating your house, you can mix some safe pest repellents into the paint or cement used for the repairs. It will keep pests such as termites away permanently.
- Block entrances of rodents and other pests. Seal points where pests such as rodents could be gaining entry into your home. These are places like holes and openings in boards as well as spaces around the sink. Gaps around doorways, windows and pipes should also be sealed.
- Simply remove wood from your home. Since some pests such as termites feed mainly on wood, it would be wise to remove most of the wood from your home. If you must keep some of the wood, then keep it completely dry, or alternatively you can treat it with pest repellents.
- Keep fruits and vegetables in the fridge. Fresh fruits and vegetables tend to be very perishable and they tend to attract pests as they become over-ripe. The fridge is the best place to store them where they stay fresh and free from pests even when half-eaten.
Pests are very common and they exist in most households. But you should never assume that your house needs to be part of the pest-infested majority of houses that battle with this problem. With the above preventive measures, you have the opportunity to live in a clean, pest-free environment!
