7 Things your Kids Should Know about Taking Care of a Car

April 11, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Most parents help their teenagers begin to drive when preparing to get their license. Although the kids may be experienced behind the wheel, they may not be informed on how to take care of their vehicle and maintain it. To ensure that they allow their car to run well for several years, there are a few important steps to teach the new drivers.

7 Things your Kids Should Know about Taking Care of a Car
1. Change the Oil

The oil that is used in cars is considered the blood of the engine. The oil should be changed every 3,000 miles to maintain the transmission and allow it to run well.

2. Check the Brakes

Have your teen check on their brakes on a frequent basis to ensure that the vehicle can stop quickly when it’s in use. Look through the rims of the tire to determine if the brake pads are still visible. If you can’t see the pads, it’s time to replace the brakes.

3. Rotate the Tires

Teach your kid to have their tires rotated each time they have their oil changed, which is every 3,000 miles. Changing the tires throughout the year will allow all of the tread to be become worn at an even rate. You can also visit companies like Discount Tire Centers to have the tires rotated or to have them replaced every 12,000 to 15,000 miles.

4. Replace the Wiper Blades

Relying on worn or broken wiper blades can inhibit visibility in the middle of a storm while on the road. Have your teen replace the blades when the windshield isn’t wiped clean when it’s raining.

5. Check the Tire Pressure

Your child should know how to check their tire pressure every month to avoid common problems that include less gas mileage, instability, and flat tires.

6. Replace Bad Headlight Bulbs

The headlights should be replaced if the bulbs become dim, which can make it difficult to drive at night and can also lead to a ticket or an accident.

7. Change the Air Filter

Instruct your teen to change the air filter on their vehicle every year or 30,000 miles to ensure that the air quality is clean and healthy to breathe while driving in the vehicle.

When your child begins to drive on their own, it’s important to teach them how to maintain their vehicle to prevent accidents or the car from breaking down. They’ll not only learn how to make repairs or maintenance on the car, but will become more responsible with the process.
