4 Fun Ways to Teach Kids about Health and Safety

April 3, 2016 by Pam Maynard

One of a parent’s responsibilities is to teach their children how to live a safe and healthy life. There are dangers for every child, from infanthood to adolescence. Using some fun activities to help teach children important safety and health lessons is a good way to engage children and keep the lessons in their head if a bad situation arises. Here are four fun ways to teach kids about health and safety.

4 Fun Ways to Teach Kids health safety
Play “What If”

This game lets you to teach children and teens about dangers they may encounter. From guiding a toddler who is facing a flight of stairs to assisting a teenage child who has gotten into trouble, kids need guidance to make the right decisions in bad situations. To play this game, interact with your children and act out different scenarios about how they should act in certain situations. After teaching them the right way to handle a situation, practice again. These situations could include the case of a fire, a break in, an injury, or a drug charge. If your teen has been accused of having or doing drugs, you may need to find a trusted lawyer targeting drug charges to help them through the situation.

Safety Hunt

Go through the family home all together, looking for potential dangers. After making a list of safety issues, challenge each child to go through the house to find if the issue has been fixed. For example, challenge each child to see if electrical outlets are safely covered, if there is a tripping hazard on the stairs, or if cords are not in reach. Following the walk through, work together as a team to remedy potential dangers.

Stop, Drop, and Roll

Go outside to play with your children on a nice day. Incorporate music and dancing to get the kids excited. Challenge the kids to stop in place when the music stops and see how fast they can do that. Then challenge the kids to drop to the ground after the pause. Practice these two steps together a few times before introducing rolling. At the end of the game, when the music stops, the children should be able to stop, drop, and roll in one direction, and then return in the other direction. While children are playing this game, let them know this is a good tactic to use for their health, safety, and well-being.

Apps

Use apps on your smartphone to let kids play games that teach healthy eating. These games let children learn about nutrition to promote healthy behaviors. Gaining points by knowing about healthy choices lets kids carry that concept over to real life.

There are a lot of fun ways to teach kids to be safe and healthy. Getting the kids motivated and engaged will help the lessons stick.
