The Egg Thief is a new story about Georgie and his search for eggs around his farm and the surrounding areas because he needed eggs for his and his mother’s breakfast. This story will teach children the value of truth telling, about good friends and about staying out of trouble. Alane Adams has written a lovely story that all children will love.
Children are like sponges, they soak in everything around them. Reading to children from the beginning of their lives is critical. I remember when I was a little girl, I would have books read over and over again until I memorized them. My sisters would get so mad at me because I would bug them to read to me.
The Egg Thief will be a favorite book from the time it is read to little ones. Georgie is a lovable character and his adventure to find eggs for his mother gets the reader caught up in the story, wondering how Georgie is going to pull it off without getting into trouble.
Georgie, a child growing up in the 1920’s Pennsylvania, wakes up to find out that all the eggs in the chicken coop had been stolen. He then finds Buster, a shaggy homeless dog, hiding in the chicken coop. Figuring that Buster was the one who took (and ate) the eggs, Georgie goes on a hunt to find replacements so that he and his mama could have breakfast.
Walking through the rain-soaked grass, Georgie and Buster took off to find eggs. They first came across a nest of duck eggs. Duck eggs are so much bigger than chicken eggs! Just as Georgie goes to gather them, they are caught by the mama duck, who wasn’t having someone steal her babies.
Buster then steers Georgie to the neighboring farm and to their henhouse. Knowing it was wrong to do so, Georgie feels guilty over taking the eggs, but gathers them anyway. Just as he and Buster were headed out of the chicken coop, they were noticed by the nice old neighbor. She thought that Georgie came over to gather the eggs for her. She told Georgie that he could have half of what he gathered in order to “pay” him for gathering her eggs.
What a blessing! Georgie gratefully split the eggs in his bucket and when she offered him a job fixing up her chicken coop, he became excited. Buster must have known the sweet old neighbor needed help.
The pair raced back to Georgie’s home in time for breakfast. He wanted to beg his mama to keep Buster because he was a good dog.
Not only is this story entertaining, it teaches a valuable lesson. It teaches that stealing is wrong, however, helping others pays off. I really enjoyed this story and hope that others will too! Maybe this will be the story that gets your children hooked on stories, books and the adventures that they bring.
