“Pearls are always appropriate”. That’s what Jackie Kennedy said. Even in situations and on outfits you wouldn’t normally associate with pearls, such as shoes and leather jackets, they are still wonderful. As a bonus, by just pushing the fashion envelope a little, you can create outstandingly edgy outfits that will leave everyone in awe. Here are 4 ideas for fashion forward outfits you can create with pearls and the ways in which to style them.
#1. The dress
Wearing pearls is normally associated with jewelry. When you think about wearing a string of pearls, you immediately think about wearing them around your neck, in the shape of a beautiful, classy necklace. But what about wearing pearls on your dress? Actress Lupita Nyong’o wore a fabulous halter-top, backless dress at last year’s Oscars which was completely covered in pearls. Needless to say, her outfit oozed sensuality, mixed with class and luxury.

Luckily enough, you can replicate that look, by sporting a dress with pearl embellishments on it. You don’t need to copy Lupita’s look, because that’s the beauty of pearls. They can be styled and draped onto your dressed in any way you see fit. Here is a beautiful example which you can easily take home as far as evening dresses are concerned. Instead of the back side, you have an entire cascade of pearls, falling in an endless number down your bare back. Talk about edge!

#2. The shoes
Because, yes, pearls are like a sin. Actually, cladding your feet in pearls might seem like a sin. But it’s such a sweet and fashionable one, that I’m sure it will be forgiven. In our quest of finding the perfect ways in which to push fashion forward via pearls, we could not have excluded the shoes. And, as you will see, given that pearls are so versatile, you can create fabulous looks with both flats and high-heels.
A great trend that has taken flight in the past couple of years is the wedding converses embellished with pearls and big, satin ribbons instead of shoelaces. This is a fashion step fit for out of the box brides that want to wear a bohemian or non-traditional dress. Or who simply want to feel comfortable on their wedding day. They are also a great way of combining classy and traditional with modern and fresh.

As far as high heels are concerned, well, these truly are a sinful pleasure to indulge in. They bring an incredible level of sophistication, luxury, and decadence to absolutely any outfit your pair them with. You could combine them with jeans or pajamas and you would still get one of the best outfits you’ll ever wear. Here is a great example of a pair of pumps completely covered in pearls, with a dangerous bronze snake slithering up on the heel.

#3. The leather jacket
I’m quite certain that you’ve never thought about wearing a leather jacket adorned with pearls. You, probably, can’t picture how something like that would even look. That’s because leather jackets and pearls are somewhat of an antonym when it comes to fashion. Leather jackets are usually edgy and a bit on the wild side, while pearls are extremely delicate and subdued.
But that is exactly the reason why they should be combined more often. They come together like the yin and the yang, like two opposing forces creating a perfect balance. In order to prove that, here is a fabulous piece from the Kei Ninomiya Spring 2016 Ready-to-Wear collection. It’s an amazing black leather jacket with rows upon rows, upon rows of pearls sown into it. It looks very punk-ish and just a tad Lady Gaga, but also soft and comforting.
You can recreate this look at home as well. You can look for a leather jacket that has pearls attached to it. Or, why not, go ahead and make it yourself.

#4. The pearl corset
When we talked about wearing shoes adorned with pearls, we called it sinful. We are now talking about pearl corsets and that should be called decadent. Feminine par excellence, corsets have a way of silently transmitting a world of words and ideas. They are also one of the most versatile pieces of clothing out there. This means they can be casual, if worn with jeans, for example, they can be high class and conservative, when worn as part of a dress and they can be sultry when they’re mixed in with lingerie. Adding pearls to this fabulous creation can only make matters better.
However, be careful how you style this pearl studded corset. When adding precious gems on a piece of clothing that is already a lot in itself, it might be a bit like gilding the lily. Therefore, make sure you keep the rest of your outfit nice and simple. As stated above, you can wear it with jeans, with a simple skirt or as part of a dress. Keep your hair and, most importantly, makeup, simple.

Creating fashion forward outfits is all about combining styles, trends, and pieces that shouldn’t normally go together. And when you do that correctly, you get an outfit so inspired and so edgy that everyone will admire and envy you at the same time.
