Interview Questions with Author Tara Woods Turner
What do you want parents to learn from your book?
After reading our book we feel confident that parents will be empowered to create a life of opportunity and expanded expectations for their children, that they will know how to guide them on the path to accomplishment and a heightened sense of maturity.
Who is your target audience?
Parents, first and foremost … but we stress in our introduction how much respect we also have for grandparents, nannies, foster parents, educators, legal guardians, etc. This book is for anyone involved in the continual care and development of a child. Sometimes ancillary support systems in regards to child-rearing are overlooked and we wanted to address that in our book.
What makes a child sophisticated?
A sophisticated child is not a child who pretends to act older than his age – he is simply one who has been given a chance to explore many age-appropriate aspects of life. The sophisticated child is not necessarily focused on success or failure but on the total experience, of being exposed to exciting and novel concepts and ideas. He is cultivated, respects himself and others and is motivated to be his best self.
What can parents expect after following the advice in your book?
They will definitely see a more competent and poised child and with guidance, they will see him blossom as he matures into a sophisticated adult. Most importantly, they will see their child begin to take ownership of his own personal growth. Parents can also expect positive reactions from siblings, family members, friends, teachers, coaches and other individuals in their child’s life.
Were you surprised by anything you learned as you wrote the book?
Yes! As we drafted the book we realized that the common denominator for raising successful children is parental involvement and the ability to set a great example. We give parents the key and they are definitely in the driver’s seat! That is a good feeling for us because we were very much against the idea of another parenting book that preached down to parents and made it seem as if someone else had all the answers. Our book is about partnerships. Those between ourselves and our readers and our readers and their children.
How does your book differ from the typical child etiquette book?
As our title asserts, we go beyond good manners and help parents build a workable strategy to raise bright, engaged and engaging children. We stress good manners in several chapters dedicated to etiquette, but this book is designed for parents who want to take their already amazing kids to the next level of personal and social development.
Can modern, busy families relate the content of this book to their everyday lives?
Absolutely. In fact, the core concepts we focus on in the book, such as encouraging your child to expand his palate and appreciate fine cuisine, are ones that best suit the everyday lifestyle of the modern family. This can be facilitated, for example, by letting your child assist with grocery shopping and meal prep. We also include suggestions for fun, knowledge building activities that families can engage in on weekends and during vacations. Putting together a family heritage cookbook, as another example, can teach your child the importance of food within the social dynamic, but it also is just a lot of fun! We know how important family bonding is to the happiness and success of children.
Any parting thoughts for readers?
We want readers to understand that sophistication, much like good manners has nothing to do with quoting pages of Shakespeare or drinking tea with your pinky out. It does, however, have everything to do with life-long learning and the ability to seek out and embrace experiences and opportunities. The desire to constantly grow and expand one’s heart and mind are key components of sophistication – and really, these are the very qualities we should be encouraging in ourselves and in our children, as well.
When I initially spoke with Tara, I was intrigued with the concept of this book. As a parent, I felt an immediate connection with her and her mission. My parenting philosophy has always been: “Be the person you want your child to become.” Am I always that person? Unfortunately, no. Often times I fail, however, I am determined to pick my self up as I aim to raise sophisticated children.
