Anyone with students in middle school up through college is familiar with the need for a calculator. Math classes need them, and even some science classes will also. Casio has everyone covered with their Prizm calculator. It has a wide variety of functions on a color screen. This calculator seems like a cross between a calculator and a little computer. It is most versatile calculator I have seen.
This Prizm calculator is very different from conventional graphing calculators. Students would have been able to simply input equations to create graphs with the conventional style calculator. With Prizm they can experiment with their own graph creations on over 50 background pictures. Through this they can create real-life scenes, then understand the functions from their graphs. This is a new way to learn math and will enhance users’ understanding of mathematics.
On the graph above you can see the vibrant use of color on this calculator. When you input equations to graph, the calculator color codes them, and the graphs match the colors. The screen is big, clear, and easy to see. The colors are crisp and clear. The high resolution LCD is very nice. This technology lines up with how we live today. No more out-dated calculator that looks like your parents used it. This is user- friendly with many features.
My son is in eighth grade and he is thrilled with this Prizm calculator. It helps with all of the things he is currently working on like solving for variables, simple and compound interest, fractions, and graphing. It seems to have given him a renewed zest for math. It might be because it is new, but I hope it is more along the lines of him seeing math in a new way.
The graphs are really neat to do on the pictures you can choose. Most of the pictures were of arches or circles, so the user could try and graph along the picture lines. This will open a new dimension in how students understand math.
It is great to say they will need math in the real world, but this real-life example can show them how. You also are able to take pictures and load them onto the calculator. You can see in the picture above has a periodic table of elements. Now you have a calculator that can do multiple subjects. It really is like a computer, so much information just at your fingertips. You can even write programs on it.
I am very impressed with this calculator and my son loves it. He finds new things it can do all the time. It will take a while to really grasp the different functions because there are just so many. This calculator will last for years. It is a great investment to any student’s education. If you are not very technologically savvy, Casio has step-by-step instructions to help users navigate the calculator. It will walk you through some basic operations of each module.
The Prizm is approved to use on AP exams, the ACT, PSAT, and the SATs. It is also approved for State Tests and End-of-Course Exams.
