According to the ASPCA, between 37 percent and 47 percent of all US households have a dog. Whether you’ve adopted from the shelter (see here why you should adopt) or bought a purebred from a breeder, being prepared for your new addition is an important step. After you’ve dog-proofed the house and signed up for obedience classes, it’s time to go shopping for a few essential items all dogs need.
A Crate
Even if you won’t need to use a crate very often, you will need to crate-train your dog for emergencies, long-distance traveling and other scenarios that will require confinement. The crate should be sturdy and large enough for your dog to stand up and turn around easily. If you’ll be crating your dog while you’re away at work during the day, you’ll also need food and water dishes that clip onto the crate to avoid messy spills.
Good Shampoo
Dog fur has its own special requirements, making human shampoo a poor choice. There is a wide variety of dog shampoos available, some of which prevent tick and flea infestations or soothe dry, itchy skin. Roxy’s Remedies is a veterinary dermatologist-tested brand to consider, or you may try a shampoo to address specific concerns your dog has. If your new dog seems itchy or has any skin problems, talk to your vet about what shampoo would be best.
A Seat Belt Harness
An unrestrained dog in a vehicle can be dangerous, especially if your new furry friend hasn’t yet learned to sit in a seat and stay seated until told to move. Some dogs also try to hang out the windows or dart out of the car the moment a door is opened. If there’s an accident, an unrestrained dog can become a loose projectile and smash into other passengers. A seat belt harness will ensure everyone’s safety.
A Quality Brush
Unless you’re adopting a hairless dog, grooming will be a daily responsibility. Choose a quality brush that allows you to detangle your dog’s coat and fits nicely in your hand. If your new dog has a high-maintenance coat, such as those found on Poodles or Saint Bernards, you may need several types of combs and brushes to groom your dog. For short-coated breeds like Great Danes or Dalmatians, you may need only a stiff, short-bristle brush.
Adding a dog to your family is an exciting time. By being prepared with the proper essentials, your new furry friend will feel right at home.
