Nine Lives is more than just a comedy about cats! It’s about what happens when a family doesn’t learn how to balance their work life and home life. That got me thinking, what am I doing to make sure I try to balance my work and family time. Do I make an effort to “unplug” and spend time with my boys each day? Sadly, I do NOT do it enough.
Being a blogger makes balancing your work and family life even harder. I work outside the home and when I get home, I sit at my computer for a few hours to get my “blog work” done. It’s almost impossible for me to spend a whole day unplugged. I asked a few of my blogger friends what THEY do to ensure quality family time. I asked them if they are able to “unplug” during family time. I am proud to say that most of my blogger friends have set up certain times and activities to make time for their loved ones!
Michelle from Powered by Mom says: “If we’re all home we sit down together. My daughter and I read together. Her and her dad play video games or sometimes we all watch a movie together!”
Laura from Celebrate Woman Today has some “Must-Haves when it comes to family time:
– Spend time playing outside with my son daily, usually when he’s back at school or when we break during our homeschooling session
– Play table games with him
– Read with him at least 30 mins in English and 30 mins in Russian
– Food: We have dinner almost every day, together as a family
– Bed Time: I cuddle with him and we just talk. Sometimes, we pull our favorite “I spot” books and do a few pages.
– Weekends are busy with sports and other events. But based on the schedule, we pick a place randomly and just go there. Could be park, could be movies, could be trail.”
Victoria from Mommy’s Playbook does: “Hug therapy, LOL…. I make all my kids give everyone a hug each morning. I think it helps with bonding. They used to hate it but now they are used to it and don’t flip out over hugs.”
Julee from Mommy’s Memorandum says: We eat together and have a dinner conversation jar. We unplug for one hour every night to just be (I love the sound of my kids’ breathing!) We go for long drives and sing at the top of our lungs to the radio (my daughter loves music) we read together.”
Debbie from Africa’s Blog knows how to have fun: “We have been known to have wild and crazy dance parties (which I’m sure look like we’re getting shot lol, we have NO rhythm!!) After pick up from daycare, we have dinner, then we hang with Gradie, we play, sing and we read a lot.”
These ladies have inspired me to make my own plan for unplugging! My son is 13 and is growing up too fast. I know he enjoys his time online with his friends, but we don’t want to miss out on ANY chances to slow down and have fun just being a family!

About the Movie:
Tom Brand (Kevin Spacey) is a daredevil billionaire at the top of his game. His eponymous company FireBrand is nearing completion on its greatest achievement to date – the tallest skyscraper in the northern hemisphere. But Tom’s workaholic lifestyle has disconnected him from his family, particularly his beautiful wife Lara (Jennifer Garner) and his adoring daughter Rebecca (Malina Weisman).
Rebecca’s 11th birthday is here, and she wants the gift she wants every year, a cat. Tom hates cats, but he is without a gift and time is running out. His GPS directs him to a mystical pet store brimming with odd and exotic cats- where the store’s eccentric owner- Felix Perkins (Christopher Walken), presents him with a majestic tomcat, named Mr. Fuzzypants.
En route to his daughter’s party, Tom has a terrible accident. When he regains consciousness he discovers that somehow, he has become trapped inside the body of the cat. Adopted by his own family, he begins to experience what life is truly like for the family pet, and as a cat, Tom begins to see his family and his life through a new and unexpected perspective. Meanwhile, his family adjusts to life with an odd and stubborn cat, and his son David (Robbie Amell), steps up in ways Tom never expected.
If any hope exists of returning to his family as the husband and father they deserve, Tom will have to learn why he has been placed in this peculiar situation and the great lengths he must go to earn back his human existence.
