Family Finance: 6 Things You Are Spending Too Much Money On

January 7, 2016 by Pam Maynard

Many families waste thousands of dollars a year spending too much money on the necessities. Maybe the parents weren’t taught proper money management growing up or don’t have a understanding of balancing a checkbook. There are many reasons why families can be dragged down into financial ruin but there is hope. Read ahead for a look at six areas where your family might be overspending without even realizing it.

6 Things You Are Spending Too Much Money edit

Insurance

Finding the proper insurance is an absolute necessity for many families to help them protect their cars, homes, and even their health. Families can cut down on their insurance premiums by bundling their various policies, sticking with a single insurance provider, and checking in for new discounts every year. With each individual insurance agency there are also different programs that you can complete for continued discounts. Ask your insurance provider for options on how you can save in the future.

Produce

People will often settle into a habit when it comes to buying groceries and purchase the same items every time they go shopping. This can be a pricey mistake when seasonal items fluctuate in price and quality. Taking a few extra moments to track the price of your fruits and vegetables will help you get better quality food at a lower price.

Clothes

Buying new clothes for a family can be a major expense for those that aren’t careful. One simple way to lower your costs is to buy seasonal clothing when it is not in season. Most stores discount warmer clothes in February and summer clothes around the start of the school year. Families should also take advantage of online deals, like those from www.allusaclothing.com, for clothing necessities such as socks and undershirts.

Water

Many of us take advantage of the seemingly unlimited water that we have access to. This can add up to thousands of dollars in utility bills and bottled water by the end of the year. Upgrades such as a whole home filtration system and tankless water heater will provide your family with cleaner water at a much lower price.

Cable and Internet

Bundling your family’s smartphone, cable, and internet bills could save you some money, but these deals are not always as good as they seem. If your family now uses their computers and mobile devices to stream movies and TV shows, then you might want to consider dropping your cable altogether.

New Pets

There are pets in over 43 million homes in the United States, and these animals can be a major investment that people don’t think about financially. Consider whether or not you and your family can not only provide for a pet emotionally but financially as well. There are tons of “hidden” costs that pet ownership can entail. Instead of going with a purebred dog or cat that can cost thousands to buy and paper, many local pounds offer free adoption days that include all of the animal’s shots, toys, and papers.

These six expenses are only the tip of the iceberg. Every family should sit down once a year, go over their budget, and find some areas where they can make improvements.
